This book helped my son understand that he is not the only one with withholding problems...however it is a little wordy and loses his attention probably 1 out of every 3 times we read it.Overall, if you have a child with bowel movement problems, I would recommend you purchase this book for them.

We have had a year of pooping problems that seemed to just be getting worse and worse. It would consume an entire day or two once it became too hard to hold it anymore. Even then we would spend hours back and forth on the potty with tears, tummy aches, crying, bargaining, bribing, apologies, promises, several icky "accidents," a painful irritated bum, and finally a poo that was bigger than anyone else's in our house - by far!!! Our very smart, headstrong 3-1/2 yr old was on day 4 since her last BM when this book arrived in the mail. We read it together and talked about the little boy in the story along the way. She and "Ryan" are very similar! She completely understood the analogy of "cleaning out the trash" and really liked the diagrams. She declared herself the "boss of her body" and tried again on the potty with some success! A couple hours later her tummy ache was back as was the all too familiar look of panic... so we read the book again... and she marched into the bathroom (by herself because she could do it!) and was completely successful!!! Everyone in the house celebrated with her and she put a little purple star on her calendar to track her progress (after doing a hilarious "I'm the boss of my body" dance around the house). Then, we went to the store and she picked out foods that help to make softer poops. I think the most amazing part of this book is that it acknowledges the fear/pain that some kids experience with BMs and takes their desire to control their body and educates and empowers them into having a more functional / productive control over themselves and the process. I would recommend this book to anyone who's kiddo hold it, fights the process, or is just plain scared to go. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS BOOK!!!

I'm totally impressed with this book. I bought this book after about 2 months of fighting my newly potty trained 2 1/2 year old to poop on the potty rather than in her undies. Don't get me wrong, she'd try but she was too scared to actually go- every poop was rare, and a fight that would end in tears and pooped undies. I got this book in a little bit of desperation, we read it twice to my poor constipated preschooler, and now she "reads" it to herself at least once a day. Since reading this book I've gotten her to go potty at her grandma's house, and all I have to do is say "will you please try and go poop for me?" AND SHE GOES!!!! I'm still in awe. She's so proud of herself, and of course since shes less constipated its much less scary and the cycle continues for good. I'm a happy mom with no poopy undies for almost two weeks now. She's a happy kiddo with a less grumpy belly. High Praise all around.

This book is just OK. It is a little wordy and long for a preschooler. I also found the doctor character's story a little difficult for a child to connect to. She tells Ryan (her patient who is afraid to poop) a long-winded tale of a fox who grows up, moves out on his own, and stops taking care of his house. His parents come to visit him and are disappointed that his house is filled with trash, which motivates him to clean up and take control of his life again. The doctor then transitions back to her patient and explains how poop is the trash our body doesn't need and how we have to let it out. I have no problem with that, but couldn't the fox have been a kid with a messy room that needed to be cleaned? Most children listening to this story aren't going to connect to a messy grownup who lives on their own. I think the author almost had a hit with this one.

EDIT: Okay, I had to edit this post because literally the next day, my son had no problems with pooping - no buildup, no fear, NOTHING, and he says it's because the book helped! This is a kid who would cry and run around the room, desperately trying to hold the poop back. This book is magic. LOLI have an advanced toddler (already completed 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten at 2.5 years old), so the wordiness wasn't the problem. The content of the words, however, seemed too advanced for him. For example, they took about using pull-ups once in a while if you're afraid to poop on the potty, but my son isn't using the potty yet. He's terrified of pooping in his pull-up, let alone on the potty. So this is definitely better geared toward young children, not toddlers.

My husband and I don’t know how this worked but it did! Our daughter was fully potty trained and about two months ago she became afraid to poop in the potty. We tried everything between asking doctors and her daycare providers but we were all stumped! We’ve tried bribing her with toys, ice cream... everything! Yet, nothing! She loves books so we started looking for a poop book and found this one. Seriously, the first time we read it to her she ran to the potty and pooped! She has pooped in the potty every day since with no accidents! None! She has no problems using public restrooms or going in other bathrooms anymore either.Again, we don’t know how this worked (the story is extremely weird) but as the reviews say... it seems to work for little ones!!!! Two moths of regression literally ended the first time reading this!

I liked the book. I did find some good information and designs. My library is large. I found some design elements in here that taught me a few things. My jewelry skill level is high. I think it fits more for a middle level. I did enjoy the book though. I know I'm hard to please when it comes to jewelry making books. If you want to enjoy a new jewelry making book, this will do just that. Read the details first to make sure this is the type of jewelry making process you want to learn. Like I said I'm hard to please on J-M'g books. I did like the layout of the book. The pics are great. Lot of thought in producing the book as well.

Love the idea of soldering without using a dangerous torch. Don't get me wrong, you can end up with some nasty burns if you don't use the soldering iron with caution, but this technique is not as intimidating as the torches. In addition, you are less likely to melt certain materials, and since the melt point of the solder is way lower, you have more materials to choose from. Since Laura is one of the few artist using a soldering iron, I hope she writes another book on this subject. Truly, tabletop soldering and just as pretty as the other stuff.

This book has a lot of great information about creating jewelry from found objects especially pendants from glass which are soldered. The information on soldering is very detailed so if you are new to soldering with copper tape and lead free solder this would be a fantastic book for you. This method of soldering is similar to stained glass artists. If you have seen the pendants that use two glass slides and a collaged image of some sort, this is the method you would use. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for some fresh ideas.

Great book for ideas but is missing essential elements for an instructional book. For example what Watt soldering iron do you need, stating the reader should try different brands and or variety of items can get pricey and I did not find theses suggestions helpful. This is not a book for a beginner.

I have always admired the unique pieces of jewelry this artist makes, so when her book, Boho Chic Jewelry, came out, I had to have it. The step by step instructions are excellent. If someone has never soldered, or foiled, or even used a ring saw, the author explains the processes step by step and even gives her readers warnings and precautions. The instructions for the individual projects are easy to follow and she gives ideas for personalizing the projects. The photographs are crisp and also very helpful when following the instructions. This book is an asset to any artist's collection.

Terrific book. Answered many questions I had about jewelry making with an iron. Excellent details with pictures and explanations. Happy I found this book.

I liked this book so much that I wrote a blog post about it. [...]Laura Beth Love takes care to include all the details needed for you to make your own broken china jewelry. She also includes good photos of the process and finished work.

I like this book. Not as good as others I have seen however this does have wonderful jewelry idea's with great pictures and instructions. It really was not what I needed though.

Listening to Stone: The Art and Life of Isamu Noguchi, by Hayden Herrera

Review

“The genius of Listening to Stone is how its author, Hayden Herrera, inhabits the sculpturing hand of its subject. Rather than focus on the surface, Herrera gest 'beneath the skin,' as Noguchi would say, to the 'brilliance of matter' . . . [An] elegant account.” ―James Panero, The New York Times Book Review“Masterful . . . Herrera had to synthesize a vast amount of material to produce this authoritative account.” ―Ann Levin, The Associated Press“Hayden Herrera's welcome and comprehensive biography of [Noguchi] provides a definitive portrait of a figure who, by the time he died in 1988, was seen by many critics as the greatest American sculptor of the 20th century . . . Listening to Stone is a complex account of a flawed and restless visionary.” ―Michael Upchurch, The Seattle Times“Herrera wisely used the biographical framework for Listening to Stone: The Art and Life of Isamu Noguchi . . . And what a tale it is! One that Ms. Herrera tells with clarity and Measured restraint. Noguchi knew all sorts of people--important artists and architects, patrons and politicians--and met them in a world-wide variety of places. At times Listening to Stone unfolds almost like a novel.” ―E. A. Carmean Jr., The Wall Street Journal“A passionate stone carver and a constant traveler with a notoriously complicated love life, Noguchi constructed, with tremendous vision, skill, and turmoil, dynamic outdoor installations all around the world. But as Herrera . . . so sensitively illuminates and assiduously documents, his mixed heritage and illegitimate birth caused him endless anguish . . . Herrera tells Noguchi's astounding, many-chaptered story of 'unstoppable creative energy,' fame, and perpetual alienation with thrilling narrative drive and deep perception and reinvigorates appreciation for Noguchi's searching and evocative art.” ―Booklist, (starred review), Donna Seaman“Herrera delves into the details of the life of influential and enigmatic American sculptor Isamu Noguchi in this thorough and solid biography . . . Herrera's expertise and insight illuminate Noguchi's evolving creative process, as well as the full scope of his personal relationships . . . Herrera adroitly shows that Noguchi was more than just a sculptor-he was a skilled craftsman, a heartbreaker, and a philosopher of design. This biography carves a smooth portrait of one of the most prolific and original artists of the twentieth century.” ―Publishers Weekly (Top Ten Art, Architecture & Photography Pick for Spring 2015)“A comprehensive biography of a sculptor of stone and space . . . Herrera gives readers an ample, thorough analysis of his estimable art.” ―Kirkus Reviews“From beginning to end, Listening to Stone is a beautifully written biography and an engrossing tale of one of the most inventive artists of the twentieth century. As she elucidates Noguchi's poetic genius and his wonderfully unclassifiable approach to art, Hayden Herrera brings to life the milieus in which Noguchi lived like no one else. From the mountainous coast of rural Japan to bohemian New York in the 1920s to Paris and Tokyo in the following decade, she vividly presents Noguchi's relationship with his settings. This is an enticing book achieved with an élan consistent with the magical work of a remarkable artist.” ―Nicholas Fox Weber, author of The Bauhaus Group: Six Masters of Modernism“Listening to Stone provides a sweeping portrait of a rebel genius who was able to make a difference doing the work he most loved. Hayden Herrera helps us understand a man who, like many of his friends and associates, was branded an outlaw because he was so far ahead of his time. Listening to Stone is a monument to the man who created monuments around the world.” ―L. Steven Sieden, author of Buckminster Fuller’s Universe: His Life and Work

I’ve seen some of Noguchi’s work, and Hayden Herrera’s discussions of it are enlightening. Still, my fascination is with Noguchi the man. He was clearly not the easiest person to get along with, but his tremendous drive, his insecurities, his amorous quests and intense focus all make for a great story.Imagine a boy of mixed parentage, born in the U.S., raised partly in Japan, who sets off alone at the age of thirteen on a ship bound from Yokohama to Seattle. From there, still alone, he makes his way across the U.S. by train to a boarding school in Indiana. Early on, from a story like this, we see much of Noguchi’s character: he was a traveler, he was unafraid, and he was forever torn between two cultures. Because of his mixed blood, he said, “I am always nowhere.” “When I’m in Japan, I think I should be I the United States, and when I’m there I want to be back in Japan.”This same geographic impulse—“I simply can not stay in one place for a long time”—also seems to have played out with his romantic liaisons. Reading about his long list of lovers, I thought of the old line, “She who flies from me, I follow, and she who follows me, I fly from.” Or, as Noguchi himself put it: “I’m nice to women who are bad for me and bad to women who are good for me.”He could be cantankerous, ungrateful and self-centered—as well as wonderfully buoyant and supportive. It all makes for a great read, in this biography of one of our country’s most notable sculptors.

Preparing to lead tours of Noguchi's works at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden this fall, I found this biography an extremely helpful resource. It is clean and clear, if a bit prosaic. Herrera leans heavily on Noguchi's own autobiography and seems to draw little from other sources, save a few still living individuals close to the artist, including Noguchi's last lover. The book is best when it maps narrative to image, and the inclusion of some wonderful hard-to-find photos is one of the book's strongest attributes. The book also is especially adept at detailing virtually every lover of import the artist had, including Frida Kahlo (about whom Herrera has also authored a biography), which makes for some saucy reading. The major struggle I faced was the implication that there was a seemingly precise turning point when Noguchi turned from starving and struggling artist to overnight success. This is not, in fact, an accurate portrayal of Noguchi's arc. I don't fault Herrera for failing to capture the trajectory or finding the inflection point, for, in fact, I don't believe there was one. But I'm not sure why she seems to have decided she needed this in the telling of the tale. Another peculiar aspect to the story, related to my primary misgiving, is that Herrera seems to paint Noguchi as a critical failure, even into the 1960s, when he was anything but. On the one hand, he was receiving, she points out, retrospectives and major commissions around the globe. Yet, she routinely depicts reviews of the artist's work that carried harsh judgments or worse. I suspect Herrera selects this approach to continually cast her subject as an underdog, but it creates the peculiar impression that Noguchi was not an accepted artist when he clearly was. These are, in the end, relatively small problems in a well-constructed, competently researched narrative. But they leave the reader wondering why Herrera didn't thread the needle just a tad more carefully -- in the service of what would have made this important book even more believable.

Very well written. Herrera very wisely frequently uses Noguchi's own words. He is one of my favorite sculptors so I found it fascinating to read about his development as a man and an artist. It was immensely interesting to learn about what influenced him, the trajectory of his career and the development of and living with his Eastern/Western conflict. I highly recommend this book.

Received in perfect condition and on time.Material looks comprehensive and as I hoped although I haven't dug into it in depth yet.Unable to critique fully.

Sometimes a little too much detail.Enjoyed reading about such an interesting person and how he evolved to such an amazing artist / furniture designer.Interesting to read about the time he lived.

A great history of Noguchi; fascinating man!

Great read for an art lover. The author uses a sparse and smooth writing style. Therare subjective commentary was thoughtful.

Usually not drawn to biographies, but this is a good one,I read a little each night and amazed by the complexity of his life and all the connections. Hayden does a great job in keeping it going...a fun read.

Face the Music: A Life Exposed, by Paul Stanley

From Booklist

Most people will probably not associate sensitivity with the flamboyant heavy-metal rock band KISS, and yet in his memoir, front man, rhythm guitarist, and cofounder Paul Stanley succeeds in making a connection with the reader, KISS fan or not. Born with microtia, a deformity that left him deaf in his right ear, Stanley felt like “a freak.” His stage makeup (heavy white face paint with a star around his right eye), therefore, functioned as a mask that hid his doubts and insecurities and turned him into a larger-than-life persona, Starchild, which served, he explains, as “a defense mechanism to cover up who I really was.” Stanley discusses his childhood growing up lonely and friendless in Manhattan and Queens, and the pivotal night when he saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show and realized that music would be the “vehicle” to lead him out of his misery. He also writes about his fellow band members, the ups-and-downs of stardom, and the decadent rock-star lifestyle, coming across through it all as likable and down-to-earth. --June Sawyers

Review

“Paul Stanley proves himself as an artist in music and on canvas and now with a great book.” (Jimmy Page)“Both honest and inspirational. Amazing tales from one of rock’s great frontmen.” (Sir Elton John)“Paul is a great man who has achieved great things. From the Popcorn Club all the way to the Hall of Fame, his story is inspiring and motivating for anyone who dreams big.” (Dave Grohl)“An entertaining yet piercingly honest journey from self–conscious child to the world’s most visually famous rock band, to, finally—with the makeup wiped away—a place of peace as a father and a man. Paul Stanley’s story is both ordinary and extraordinary, which makes it inspiring.” (Mitch Albom, author of The First Phone Call From Heaven and Tuesdays With Morrie)“For years the members hid their true identities behind cartoon personas and hard rock anthems... After years of carefully maintaining his Starchild superhero identity, Stanley lets down his guard and unleashes a torrent of pent-up feelings that erupt and flow over 400 pages like molten lava.” (Guitar World Magazine)“KISS’ flamboyant “Starchild” unplugs his high-wattage amps and introduces fans to an even more intriguing character: Stanley Harvey Eisen... [Face the Music is] an indispensable part of KISStory.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Elegantly and thoughtfully, Stanley takes us behind the mask of Starchild, his KISS persona, and shares intimately his own insecurities about his physical appearance and his emotional life.” (Publishers Weekly)“Most people will probably not associate sensitivity with the flamboyant heavy-metal rock band KISS, and yet in his memoir, front man, rhythm guitarist, and cofounder Paul Stanley succeeds in making a connection with the reader, KISS fan or not.” (Booklist)

I loved and hated this book. I loved it because I enjoyed the triumphs over his obstacles, and found it inspiring. BUT as a long time fan of KISS I found Paul Stanley a big disappointment as a human being. He basically starts the book by complaining about his parents and blaming them for his short comings, or for not being supportive. When he speaks of the early years of KISS it's clear he has a personal vendetta against drummer Peter Criss for whatever reason, in fact there is not one time he mentions Peter in a positive light. Every single time Peters name comes up it's to trash him. From Peters performance as a drummer, his singing, his lack of song writing skills, to his personal misgivings, to his "complaining" (and it seems Paul also does his fair share of whining here.) No I don't think Peter was the greatest rock and roll drummer there ever was, but lets face it not everyone in the 70s was Keith Moon, Neil Peart and John Bonham, but in his prime Peter held his own. Paul goes as far as to say he couldn't solo and he sounded like "Ricky Ricardo playing the bongos instead of a rock and roll drummer" Which I found amusing but also disheartening, Peters drum solos were probably the most memorable and energetic on any live album period. Yes he fell apart and stop caring in the late 70s but hey, give credit where credit is due. If he was such an awful drummer, person, and singer (yes he even said Peter couldn't sing) then why have him in the band to begin with?, and why wait so long to get rid of him? Later Paul tells a story how his first live in girlfriend was on drugs and he put her out on the street as soon he found out, which he seemed to be bragging about. Nice guy right? In his early days as a cab driver he also brags about stealing money from his job. Later in the book he finds out his father was in a loveless marriage with his mother and had a long term mistress, Paul basically s***s all over his dad for it... after writing through out the whole book about all the women he's slept with. I suppose in Paul's eyes his dad was only permitted one for his whole life. What makes all this so disappointing is that Paul is a grown man, he's not in his 20s where he can bitch and it's cool and rebellious, he's in his 60s, and to use his own words "complaining about winning the lottery and having to pay taxes" Rather than being forgiving and seeing the big picture, which is. "Hey my childhood was rough, but it made me who I am and I wouldn't change that for a thing." " Peter was great and did a lot for the band, including Beth, and some diversity in vocals, and maybe he wasn't the John Bonham I fantasized about playing with but he did some tasty drum lines and memorable solos, if only he weren't such a pain in the ass" ... He is more forgiving toward Ace, and it comes off more honest when he complains about him. He also bitches a lot about Gene trying to take credit for being the genius behind KISS and sets the record straight there. He even bitches about the late Eric Carr, which wasn't his first choice for replacing Peter. Toward the end of the book he comes around and tries to convince everyone what a great guy he is because he found love and has kids. What I did like about the book was he did show us a side to him which we don't often see. His ear deformity, growing up and while with the band, the fact that he had no friends, and that's why he worked so hard ( big surprise there, he still doesn't realize he was a selfish jerk.) So yeah Peter bitches about being ripped off and taken advantage of in his book, and Paul doesn't lead me to believe this wasn't the case. I suppose after reading all there bios (and Lydia's) I can see they all have different view points about how things went down, and why they did the things they did. But Paul and Gene walked away with KISS,A and all the money and glory that comes with it, to continue bitching about 2 guys that helped put, and keep them on the map is beyond me. KISS was on the verge of being a one hit wonder before "Beth" can you give Peter some credit for at the very least being the voice behind the song that saved your ass from obscurity? In the end it was still an interesting read, but also a turn off.

Huge Kiss Fan Here. I ran across an interview paul did for this book on the Today Show. Paul came across the most authentic I have witnessed any member of Kiss so I purchased the book. Paul is a NYC kid like I was. I was pleasantly surprised to read about the many things we had in common. He even lived 3 blocks away from me at one point. Thanks for turning me onto The Move. GREAT BAND !The book tells the Kiss story and the Paul Story. I found it to be very informative and reflective of a life attained through hard work and determination, also of luck.Paul stresses the good and disregards the bad as un necessary. The Starchild has grown up.Thanks for the memories and the reminder to be yourself. Kiss was very instrumental to me in my youth. I will never forget the joy I got listening to them and staring at the album covers. My imaginary friends that inspired me when all felt wrong.Peace

It seems there are three types of Rock Star Biographies: "I survived but it ruined my life", "He died, this is how it ruined his life" and the rarest of all, "I survived and came out reasonably healthy and normal". This is one of the latter.Paul turns out, unsurprisingly, to be the intelligent, sensitive one. Don't expect minutiae about tours, equipment or particular songs and albums. Those stories are told in detail elsewhere. This is the well written and engaging story of Paul's overcoming a physical handicap (deafness and deformity of an ear) to become one of the biggest stars of the '70s. He holds back very few punches in exposing his take on his bandmates. Having read numerous books by and about KISS I believe I'm more inclined to believe Paul than the others. Those who aren't fans might be tempted to give this a miss, but if you have any interest in the story of the self described "Hottest Band In The World" told by one who was there, it's worth a read.

Like a lot of kids back in the mid to late 70s, I was a huge KISS fan and they were my very first concert experience in 1977. But, admittedly, I kind of 'grew out' of my KISS phase by high school as I discovered other groups and styles of music, and only listened to them on rare occasions in the ensuing years (although I still followed news reports about them). When they launched the first of their 'farewell tours' in the late 1990s, I caught one of their shows. I finally decided to buy Paul's book for a couple reasons, 1.) I'm on a kick lately reading a lot of band/musician biographies and autobiographies, especially of the music I grew up with, and 2.) I've always been curious to read a first-hand description of the origin of KISS. I went into this with moderate expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the book overall. Paul was honest, candid and thoroughly captivating. I learned a lot about him as a person and what motivated him to get into music, start the band KISS and to continue participating in it for the next four decades. It was kind of hard putting this book down to be perfectly honest. If you're a KISS fan, this is a great book. If you aren't, it's still a great book. I'm now listening to these guys again on Spotify, and am planning to see them on their next "final" tour in March, 2019.

Fun to look at, unique structure gets people to pick it up and look.

May not give it away. With twelve inches of snow on the ground it's a treat to sit here and look through it and forward to spring.

Live these books

My 7 year old daughter received this as a christmas gifts. The pictures are beautiful and the facts are interesting. She can't wait for spring when we can go wildflower hunting and identifying together :-) My 5-year old boy (on the other hand), shows no interest in flowers... go figure ;-)

These are great educational tools for kids. I have the entire set.

Now we can name the wildflowers we see each year. So compact, you can keep them in your glove box or console. Great for children as well.

Great for educating children.

I love fandexes! So much information and such a fun way to learn it.
