I am currently buying books to augment my son's first grade history and I LOVE this one. It is factual without being overly graphic and depicts her whole life, thus giving scope of all Helen Keller overcame. I am looking forward to introducing him to Braille and sign language as mention in the biography. Excellent depiction of an amazing woman and the people who helped her.

Helen Keller's story inspired me as a young girl. I am so glad I can now share this story with my son. My son is in fourth grade, but if your child reads very well this book could definitely be read by younger readers. This story is also a great way to teach children about accepting others, as well as overcoming the various limitations that life puts on us.

This book series is perfect for my students! I especially like the fact that there are quite a few interesting, educational options in this series, and not just narrative options.

After watching a cartoon on Helen Keller, my daughter (2nd grade) was intrigued by the story of Helen Keller. So I purchased this book for her. She finished it in a matter of minutes, but she did enjoy the read and pictures. Great starter book.

I purchased this as a gift for my niece and she loves it!!! :)

Bought as a Xmas present to add to 24 other books, as a count down to Xmas advent read- a - thon! The books were purchased for a 7 year old girl and her 4 year old brother. They read one book a night until Xmas! The book is well written, great pictures, and the kids could read the book themselves! Price made it easy to add to the other 24 books!

My second graders loved this book!

Well written and engaging book. Written so my daughter asked extra questions. Highly recommend.

Review

"An unforgettable journey into the heart of Peru's past that takes the reader on a hunt for the lost cities of the Incas, the famous Machu Picchu among them.  It's also a sensitively written portrait of Hiram Bingham, one of the last great explorers of our time--a man set on fulfilling his destiny--and a judicious historical account of the disenfranchisement of the Peruvian people, who had their heritage stolen by those claiming to protect it."--Peter Nichols, author of Final Voyage and A Voyage for Madmen

Heaney's CRADLE OF GOLD is an interesting, well-written, balanced, and entertaining account of one of the real-life Indiana Jones' archaeologists - Hiram Bingham - America's discoverer of the great abandoned Inca city of Machu Pichu. The looks at the issue of the North American rediscovery of the ruins, while also telling the Peruvian side of the story. Sadly, as with the Indiana Jones character, the story is one of American archaeologist grave robberies, botched excavations and educational institution arrogance. Heaney tells it with all the sordid twists and turns.

Here's a good story, told in a beautiful narrative style by a well-qualified author, but here's the thing: This book isn't so much a biography of Bingham or a study of the fall of the Inca empire as it is the story of the intermingling of institutions and their claims upon sites and artifacts in Cusco, Peru. It is a careful analysis of cultural ownership, and if such a concept is even possible.Yale, and its various sponsored expeditions, are central to the story. In fact, I'd say the author gives us too much here. Throughout the book the reader may forget that we're supposed to be learning about the rediscovery of Machu Picchu because we're reading about the history of Yale University. Perhaps that's what the author intended. That minor complaint aside, the reader is treated to a beautifully told story in the history of American anthropology. It really DOES read like a real-life Indiana Jones story, and Bingham was a huge figure, much like his fictional counterpart.Still, this is ultimately a book about institutions and politics, and those looking for a detailed biography or a detailed history of the end of the Inca empire will be disappointed.

On the morning of July 24, 1911, a tall lecturer-cum-explorer from Yale University set off in a cold drizzle to investigate rumors of ancient Inca ruins in Peru. The explorer chopped his way through thick jungle, crawled across a "bridge" of slender logs bound together with vines, and crept through underbrush hiding venomous fer-de-lance pit vipers. Two hours into the hike, the explorer and his two escorts came across a grass-covered hut. A pair of Indian farmers walked them a short way before handing them over to a small Indian boy. With the boy leading the way, Hiram Bingham stumbled upon one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century; and what was named in 2007 as one of the new seven wonders of the world: Machu Picchu.Christopher Heaney's "Cradle of Gold" recounts the discovery of Machu Picchu , but also dives deeply into the expeditions leading up to this seminal archaeological discovery, as well as later expeditions and the political intrigues that still exist today. To be clear, Bingham didn't truly 'discover' Machu Picchu. There were two Indian families living on the mountain who were even using the broad Machu Picchu plaza as a garden. It's common in modern times to reference Bingham as the "scientific" discoverer of the mountain top Inca citadel. According to Heaney, it was common during his day as well. Within the last two years, research has emerged that indicates that not only did locals know of the ruins perched above the Urubamba River, but foreign interests were both aware of Machu Picchu, and had sought out (and possibly found), treasure among the ruins. Heaney points out that the debate of who 'discovered' Machu Picchu began the moment Bingham reached the ruins and saw a name clearly scratched in charcoal on an ancient Inca wall.Heaney spent years researching the story in Peru, the UK and across the United States to compile fresh and historic perspectives on Bingham the man, and Bingham the explorer. Heaney covers Bingham's childhood where he group up in Hawai'i with a deeply religious father and grandfather, both of whom were, and are, renown for their work in spreading and reinforcing Christianity across the Pacific.According to Heaney, Bingham found himself caught between the very conservative world of his religious upbringing, and a strong desire to explore. Additionally, he had to live up to a well-known name and reputation that was generations-old. He ended up marrying an heiress to the Tiffany fortune which provided the early funding of his first trips to South America. He had a knack for history, writing, and leadership. The combination of the three landed him in Peru in 1911.A second ruin-hunting expedition, with primary funding from Yale University, where Hiram graduated and lectured, and the National Geographic Society, returned him to Peru to flesh out his previous discoveries and the historical theories he proposed. Bingham explored, excavated and publicized on his own behalf. Ultimately the world embraced his Lost City which he thought was the first and last cities of the Incas. It is, in fact, the strongest of Bingham's legacies. But there's more to the story than discovery. There's a political side that adds a rather distasteful bit of reality to the dream-like elements of the Inca city in the clouds. Within the last three years, Peru has been pushing Yale, in the press and in the courts, to return the artifacts that Bingham purportedly took with him from Peru during his series of expeditions. This dark cloud hangs over Machu Picchu which is set to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bingham's revelation to the world. This political battle is not new. It emerged essentially as Bingham was making his round of celebrity lectures in the U.S. lauding his discoveries. And the battle didn't simply occur around Bingham, he was often right in the middle of the fray. Heaney also makes it clear that Bingham was not a mere innocent bystander, but he helped create a problem that has lasted almost a century.Heaney's story is very detailed and extremely well researched as evidenced by 20+ pages of references and footnotes. He got his hands on several archives rich in journals and personal correspondence related to Machu Picchu and Hiram Bingham. Heaney provides a thrilling account of Bingham's journeys, through the multifaceted lenses of those related to his Peruvian expeditions, as well as his own well-known accounts. The story of Bingham's discoveries evoke the youthful passions to take on incredible challenges in far-off lands. The realities of Bingham's jungle and mountain adventures are mere fantasies of young boys across suburban America...fantasies that are reinforced through pop culture icons like Indiana Jones. Heaney suggests (even in his title) that Indiana Jones was modeled on Hiram Bingham. He, in fact, references an old Charlton Heston film,"Secret of the Incas", upon which the costumers of Raiders of the Lost Ark based Indy's outfit. Heston's character in "Secret of the Incas" is, of course, a dead ringer for Bingham.Like Indy, Bingham's story has good guys and bad guys. Unlike the movies the good guys don't necessarily wear the white hats and the bad guys don't necessarily wear the black ones.

Up to date accounting of the (re)-discovery of Machu Picchu by Hiram Bingham in 1911 now with the final return of artifacts that he collected and deposited at Yale University 100 year later. For all his imperfections, Bingham gave the world one of its wonders which continues to draw visitors internationally. Heaney gives an even handed account of the history up to the present. It is a 'must read' before a visit to Peru.

Read this book on the way to Machu Picchu. Helped me understand so much more about the site. Loved the book!

Loved reading this narrative after I visited Machu Picchu in 2003Probably would have been better to have read it before I wentHence I have given it to two other friends before they wentIt's inciceful, and tells many facts and other history the average person doesn't know about the whole history of Bingham and the issues with PeruHighly recommend it

Cradle of Gold (a silly, inappropriate title) unravels the complicated fabric of Hiram Bingham's life and early 20th Century exploration in Peru.Wealth, vanity, greed, selfishness, double-dealing, theft and politics are interwoven in Bingham's controversial and amazing life. The young author's sometimes disjointed style doesn't spoil the story. Meticulous research reveals aspects of the Machu Picchu 'discovery' that have been hidden by myth and pure fabrication.A true story and a good book.

The early years were a bit droll but things pick up significantly with the account of Bingham's travels to Peru and the subsequent years of his life. A well researched and fascinating history of an important man who wasn't perfect.

I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the Wisdom tales(I may have accidently called the Wisdom tales Wonder tales)again, having seen Ms. Forest perform live was a great pleasure. I enjoyed all the helps provided as to how these stories were found. I hope to use these resources in my own further research. I recommend all of Ms. Forest's tapes and books for enjoyable reading and listening to teachers, parents and children. Let your imagination go and you will discover the joy of story! A great effort!

This is a great book in very good condition. It was delivered quickly and was well packaged - altogether an excellent transaction. Thank you!As for the book itself - it is fabulous. I have had Wisdom Tales by the same author for a long time and absolutely loved it - and I had been looking forward to adding this to my collection. Although the stories don't have the same obvious moral twist as the first book - they are absorbing and well told. Heather Forest has a knack of taking folktales and rewriting them in a vivid way that makes them spring off the page. They are both excellent for reading out loud - but also for telling. A great resource book and one that I will enjoy for years to come.

Excellent! Strongly recommend the book for all the family

As a storyteller I've referred to it many times. Every class I used this book in has been successful. I love the stories.

As described. Thank you!

These stories are fantastic.

Others already praised this and other Shah books enough, including what Nobel Laureate Doris Lessing wrote in the introduction. What I personally saw nowhere else is p.41 and ff. on how the internal change can be performed. And then you may want to look at p.247 The Number of Reading of a Book - which does not appear more improbable than the discovery of microbes, so ridiculed before Pasteur's findings became accepted. (Some "people" still believe that the moon landings never happened or that there is no evolution, that the days of creation were not long periods but actual days).Remember: Sufi books are not to TELL you secrets. They are there to change you so that you become capable of seeing what is in plain view but you are blind. You need to cure your blindness first. And they tell you how. There is also Idries Shah Foundation and the Institute for the Study of Human Knowledge, if you want to go further. They do ordinary human things, and very efficiently so.They are NOT for people who are not viable units of the society. They are not for crazies, not for seekers of excitement. They are not for those who want to regress but for those who want to go forward to transcend social conditioning and animal passions. This and other Shah books is not about the history and anthropology of Sufism. It is about real, live and kicking system which brings results if you are honest. Shah was an actual Sufi, many other writers, probably most, are popularizers - perhaps well-meaning but still not the real thing, not speaking from personal experience, not capable of helping others to undergo transformation because they themselves were never transformed.

Learning How to LearnA friend pointed this out to me, “Learning How to Learn” is unique among books written by Idries Shah in that he answers questions posed by contemporary students in Sufism. Almost all the other books that Shah wrote contain teaching stories that leave a reader to work things out. In this volume, Shah provides some guidance for those students unsure of themselves. Here Shah shows a would be Sufi where they can go off the rails, in a manner of speaking. For me, one of the most significant problems a novice faces is that they are educated. Let me express this another way, the methods and techniques that lead to success in learning say economics or mathematics do not necessarily apply to Sufi learning. The subject of a Sufi education is the self. In this sense, it doesn’t matter whether you are an astrophysicist or plumber. (In fact, Shah might suggest that plumber has an advantage in that he doesn’t think of himself as well educated already, so he is more open to learning.)And that gets us to the main power of “Learning How to Learn,” this book shows us how our conditioned mind acts as a barrier to perceiving our true nature. Here is a short excerpt that illustrates this point:Q: What is the compatibility, if any, of the Sufi book and the Sufi teaching beyond books?A: Many people say that they cannot learn from books.INSTRUMENTAL FUNCTIONOf course, they cannot: because they have first to learn that, correctly guided, they can learn from books, or from grasshoppers, or from anything.A book, for the Sufis, is an instrument as much as it is something to give information. Information and action are both necessary. The key is the teacher. If he says: “Read this book,” then you should read it.If your answer is: “I cannot learn from books,” then you are in fact refusing his teaching. If you refuse teaching, do not be surprised if you do not learn anything.Shah, Idries. Learning How to Learn. ISF Publishing. Kindle Edition. As I read this book, I continually got the sense that I was seeing myself. I kept hearing myself say, ‘Gosh, I’m like that. That is me.’ Along with this sense of seeing myself came the realization that if I wanted to learn I had to change. Learning was changing.I won’t deny that at times I found reading “Learning How to Learn” overwhelming. Coming face to face with my own conditioning was not always a pleasant experience. Ultimately though, I found the book liberating. I began to develop the ability to observe my mind operating. This ability allowed me to see choices that I had not perceived before. I began to get the sense that I was more than my conditioning. Perhaps you will too.

This has probably been the most useful book I have ever had. Please read the excellent and detailed reviews here. With study, this book has opened my mind to much more creative thinking processes. Other books, especially by Mr. Shaw, worked along with with this book, The Sufis, Nasrudin stories, the Tales of The Dervishes, and The Arabian Nights Entertainments. For someone needing baby steps (as I did), try starting with "The Uses of Enchantment" by Dr. Bruno Bettleheim, which might give you some ideas about how to psychologically work with symbols in stories. "Learning How to Learn" was also delightful on the first read, if you merely want entertainment value. The book was invaluable to my personal growth.

I believe Idries Shah was way ahead of his time. While reading some of his work, I have been struck by the "I am not so smart afterall" feeling many times, in a positive way ofcourse. This book was not written in an easy manner, and many of the stories used to ilustrate an idea have different layers of meaning attached to them. That is why to some readers this kind of writting might seem repeling. After reading this book one learns to look at things differently, and to better understand an analyze situations but also to better measure himself. Also, one learns about the power of the story and analogy/methapor in conveying a message.I am very grateful for getting aquinted with Shah's work, and being profited from it. This book came at a perfect moment in my life, and I hope this will be also the case for you.

What can one write about masterpiece?...Not being on any comparable level to such a degree of consciousness, one can only express ones awe and gratitude for being able to contact with it, having a chance to cure or treat, at least, some serious mental ailments and to survive as a human being

It may seem like an irresponsible superlative, but I feel that this is one of the most important books written in the 20th Century. It is a treasure-trove of what I can only -- perhaps unfashionably -- call Wisdom.

I am someone who can definitely be considered a novice trail runner. I fell in love with the sport a year ago and I have since built a library of trail running books to help me become a student of the sport. That being said, The Trail Runner's companion is my favorite. What I love most about this book is that is starts with the basics. Not just with trail running technique, but also with developing the right mindset to enjoy and thrive in the sport. For me, that gave a bit of extra insight into how to approach trail running.I also loved the author's conversational writing style and stories that started each chapter. Her stories made the information seem approachable and easy to digest.Overall, this book is a welcome addition to any trail and ultrarunning library. I'd recommend it.

The Trail Runner's Companion is a great guide to trail running. Sarah's stories mixed in make the book super engaging and fun, while also including really helpful information on everything from running form to trail etiquette to being prepared for the unexpected. I find myself thinking about many of the tips provided when I am out running. For example, I've been reminding myself to be process-oriented in my training and NOT as focused on the end goal. I've also been incorporating dynamic stretching into my pre-run routine. Sarah is clearly an accomplished runner with a wealth of knowledge on all things trail running, but what I found the most enjoyable was her ability to keep it real throughout the book. The experiences she shares from her own life and those of others are in no-way elitist but 100% authentic, making her relatable to a wide audience from beginner's to the veteran trail runner. And, I really appreciate learning from a strong woman and reading about all the kick-ass things she's accomplished in her running career. I finished this book not only feeling more equipped to become a stronger trail runner, but super motivated to see what I am capable of and inspired by Sarah as well. Highly recommend!!

I’m a novice ultra runner with aspirations to run trails and have been reading a lot of books on the subject. Must confess that my previous one was by Jason Koop which appealed to my engineering background where every small and big concept related to running had a scientific explanation, which was just great. And when I started Sarah’s book I thought I had made a mistake in buying this book but how wrong I was! This is a fabulous book for novices (I don’t know about the experienced runners) and I’m one hundred percent sure that I’m going back to first page and start reading it all over again!I loved the conversational style of Sarah’s writing and also her personal stories in each chapter. Lots of photographs which were welcome since they gave a different perspective to someone staying in an Indian metro where closest trail is at many hour’s drive! This book gives a good reference frame for starting my trail running ambition and will be a valuable resource that I would keep coming back to even after many years.

I have really enjoyed digging into this new source on trail running. Although I am an experienced trail runner, I like reading about how others approach the sport and there is always something new to learn. I've enjoyed Sarah Lavender Smith's intelligent and thoughtful commentary on the Ultrarunning Podcast, so figured this would be a good read - I was right! The thing that impressed me the most is, I do believe she is the first person in a work such as this to get the information on sodium and muscle cramping physiologically correct. This alone adds credibility and it's clear to see she has researched topics with depth and precision. That coupled with her own experience, makes it a complete reference. I could not recommend this book more highly. If I were teaching a trail running course, I would select this for the textbook. Well, done!

I have long enjoyed Sarah Lavender Smith's contributions to Ultra Runner Podcast and Trail Runner magazine. When I learned of her book's impending release, I pre-ordered immediately, as I knew it would be a worthy read. The Trail Runner's Companion did not disappoint. Lavender Smith draws upon a deep fund of background knowledge, experience, and witty sense of humor to provide a handy reference on the sport of trail running. She combines sound training and self-care recommendations with personal narrative, in an organized sequence, which helps demystify trail and ultra running. Whether you are new to the trails, ramping up toward a next level goal, or simply seeking to expand your repertoire, The Trail Runner's Companion is an excellent resource.

More than simply a how-to guide, this book provides relevant anecdotes that will keep you constantly engaged and eager to read more. The author expertly integrates personal experience with evidence based research to present thoughtful, functional advice. As an aspiring ultrarunner (I have my first 50k in 7 months!) this book provided incredibly helpful insights.Furthermore, beyond simply being such an excellent book filled with incredible information and aesthetically appealing layouts on each page, I feel great knowing that I am gaining advice from such an experienced, reputable, and genuinely kind human being. I actually had the great fortune of running into the author at a trailhead this past summer and cannot stress enough what a friendly, positive influence she truly is.

This book was a complete life change for me. My entire life I have always been moody, emotionally unstable, tossed to and fro by my thoughts, bubbling with enthusiasm one moment and then sulking in a stupor the next. My last relationship was destroyed by such a mindset. Although I had ideas of what had gone wrong, this book eloquently expounded on ideas that I had vague thoughts of, but was unable to put into words. The first time I was able to put the knowledge I learned from this book into practice was a emotionally explosive moment as I realized that I finally was able to control my thoughts and take a hold of my mind. Would highly recommend this book to any and all.

This is easily one of the best books that I have read. It isn't long, but it is packed with more information than you can wrap your head around. I have read it 4 times since I got it 3 months ago, and I am working on it again. I loved this book so much that when I was in the middle of the second chapter, I got back on Amazon and ordered another 2 copies of it. Then when I finished it I went to order 3 more but I couldn't because they were still sold out from the time that I ordered the other 2. So I had to wait for them to print more, then I did order 3 more, so I have 6 copies now and I don't regret it at all.It just feels like every paragraph is pure gold honestly, sometimes it took me 20 minutes to make it through one page because of the realizations that I was having, and I needed to take time to scribble my notes into the margins. There is nothing in this book that doesn't absolutely need to be there, so you can be sure that it is worth your time and you won't be reading any filler material whatsoever. This will change your perspective on life, and if you actually do the things that are here, you change yourself. I honestly saw a change in how happy I was by doing the things that James Allen said. This is basically scripture to me now.The only complaint that I have isn't about the book, it's more about me, because I wish that I was better at doing the things outlined in this book because I know that it would help me out a ton. So that is the next goal, make sure that I am doing the things here.

This is not a smooth, flowing read. It's full of words the average person doesn't use and speech patterns of a time now past. This may or may not be part of its charm and effect. It does however illustrate quite well the though patterns of the champions of our world and lay clear instructions for success in life. Quite simply you are what you think. It's not a book on getting rich or making friends or being happy. It's a book that reminds you of the basic principals of thought and how your thoughts effect every aspect of life. A short little reminder that your mind is your greatest asset or your biggest liability.

This is one the smallest books I've read in my life and yet most impactful and eye-opening book. This book put a lot of stress on an idea that Man is what he thinks he becomes and what he does and it's not the circumstances which make him but he makes the circumstance. If you are going through or ever been through a rough patch in your life you need to read this book. If you've ever been successful or are successful in your life you need to read this. If you are rich or ever have been rich, you need to read this book. If you are poor or was poor at one time in your life you need to read it. If you are depressed or have been depressed, you need to read this book and at-last if you are happy or were happy in your life you need to read this book. In short, no matter what the circumstance is you're going through, you need to read this book not once, not twice but at least a dozen times in your life!

I really love this book and it's teaching. I want to change my life in every area and it's up to me alone. It's teaching is very empowering. It's really up to me and when I change my mind I will change my life and it starts with my thinking. I bought 2 more books from my teenage nephews because the sooner they can learn to control their thinking and acquire what they really want out of life the better. I plan to read this book once a month for 6 month so the principles can sink in plus it's less than 80 pages.

This book packs more power than many of the best selling books in the crowded field combined. You will be better of reading this short book and following through on half of it than buying all of Robbins material and attending his seminars. Not that Tony Robbins and his colleagues does not have valuable lessons to teach, it's just that this book does such a great job in less than 50 pages that any other approach to self improvement seams a waste of time. Read it and then go do it.

Working through the first 10-15 pages of this short work can be challenging. The author comes across as condescending with statements of moral impunity. The idea that all circumstances are the result of thoughts and that unfortunate moments come only to those with parallel thoughts is unsettling. But proceed. As the book continues you discover the true wealth of this book, in the idea that we can influence our surroundings, circumstances and even health by shifting towards positive, cheerful, good thoughts. Yes, yes, you can summarize the basic notion with "think positive," but the language is influential and I see how this book has influenced self-help authors. I see a lot of Neil Strauss (The Game) philosophy rooted in these passages.I may have conquered the negativity of life in social circumstances but I not infrequently find myself annoyed by a YouTube ad or some other petty inconvenience, which in turn has genuine effects on my subsequent behavior towards others. The practice must be applied across all circumstances of life. It's a challenging but great idea.
