This book is a wonderful, informative book about life in bhutan, you almost feel like you are there. I have visited Bhutan and the descriptions by Linda Leaming are truthful and beautiful about the people and geography of this magical country. I hope more people in America will read this book and put their life in perspective , we are not on this earth forever, make your life count: that does not mean with money and material things, you are not taking one thing with you when you leave, just the love and kindness you gave will matter. Signed: Daunn Munn

Married to Bhutan is the best book I've read this year so far. And I stumbled upon it by accident. I was looking at Eric Raff's "No Sense of Direction" and this was one of the "customers also read" choices. Since Leaming's memoir is about following your intuition and about choices, I like the fact that it fell into my lap. When I was about 13, my English teacher at my school in Ireland left and went to Bhutan. She came back and did a slideshow for the whole school. I just remember how happy and relaxed she seemed. There was one picture of her sitting in an outdoor bath, smiling, with a grinning young Asian man pouring water over her. All the girls laughed nervously. I never forgot how she had "followed her bliss." I can't remember if she came back to teach, or returned to Bhutan. But it was a rare glimpse of someone daring to make an unconventional choice. To get back to Leaming's memoir. It's beautifully written. A tongue in cheek humor comes through in the first part, where Leaming describes her experiences teaching English at a school in Bhutan. Her efforts to learn Dzongkha, the Bhutanese language, are truly hilarious. I guess I wondered why she was so desperate to fit in in this foreign country. The funny thing about the book for me is that as it progressed, I really didn't take to Bhutan! I realized that I would be quite unhappy there, what with the isolation, the crazy roads, the religious conformity, not having water on a regular basis, and so on. But I never for a moment doubted Leaming's love of the country. And I found her description of her relationship with her now husband, a thanka painter at the school, quite touching. There is a picture of them together at the end that melted my heart. They look right together. The book is not so much introverted and psychological as it is a meditation on happiness and making choices. Leaming says, "In the West it is possible to live and be asleep. In Bhutan one is compelled to wake up." She has certainly made what many people would think of as a crazy leap, to leave behind all that she knows and fully adopt a foreign country and its ways--and yet it makes perfect sense. In the end Leaming suggests that we can all find our own version of Bhutan, off the beaten path.

I was invited to Bhutan to speak at a International Congress on Asian Medicine and I fell in love too! So as I read this book I was totally captivated and I felt like I was back in Bhutan. The people are indeed wonderful and happy! I delayed reading the last chapter because I did not want the book to end! I've since joined her web page and get news from time to time. I am amazed at how well she acclimated coming from the Continental U.S. to Bhutan but I can definitely relate and indeed how she describes Bhutan and her people is very accurate. I love this book!!! I had a wonderful time and a very profound Spiritual experience. I will be returning to Bhutan. They truly have had over 100 years of peace and happiness! Get it, enjoy it.

This memoir describes American Linda Leaming's adjustment to a very different culture and a much simpler life. How she came to love Bhutan would be an interesting story in itself. But this book goes beyond explaining Leaming's adjustment. It also describes the beautiful and severe natural environment and the beauty of the people and customs of this agrarian Buddhist society. The contrast with American materialism is striking, both in terms of the day-to-day hardships of life in Bhutan and the shallowness of American priorities in the grand scheme of things. The author describes her learning process and mistakes with humor, making the book very pleasant reading. Rather than trying to be exhaustive, she details particular experiences; some readers might disagree with her choice of what it is important to describe. And perhaps learning about Bhutan is less interesting to readers who never expect to be there. I'll be visiting Bhutan in the near future, and i found her perspective and information very valuable.

I tripped over this captivating book while looking for something to introduce me to Bhutan before traveling there. I was charmed by it -- and this gruff old man isn't charmed by much, and certainly not by "chick lit." But more to the point, it was a perfect primer for this soon-to-be visitor. Without my realizing it, Leaming gave me insights into the culture, religion and character of this fascinating place that made my trip much more informative and interesting. I insisted my wife read it too, and she is more enthusiastic about it than I. We both told everyone else in our touring group they absolutely had to read it. Westerners have a tough time grasping non-Western cultures and viewpoints; this charming, warm, informative little volume helped me be open to a world far different from mine.

This was a very unique and different kind of book and very hard to find - only one copy in the state of IL library system! But one of our book club members suggested it. I loved her laid back quirky but clean style of writing - it all felt very tongue in cheek and at the same time as if she was sitting on a mountain top with her eyes closed and musing. Reading it was to experience "letting go" in the Buddhist sense - of any attachment to the things that Americans feel define life but instead trap us into our gerbil wheel of existence. Clearly Bhutan is one of the most beautiful places in the world physically and inwardly. A country that focuses on " Gross National Happiness" as opposed to "Gross National Product".

The author is a journalist and travel writer who was given the opportunity to move to Switzerland and learn about the country and its people. His book covers everything from chocolate and cheese, to politics, history, and ettiquette. It isn't a guide for living in Switzerland only - it is for anyone who is interested in traveling to Switzerland or just learning about the country. He gives a light, whimsical telling that I think anyone would enjoy.I learned quite a bit about the country I still haven't picked up even living here. I knew a lot of it, but the ins and outs of the government, or some of the back history of the country was new to me. I have loved living in Switzerland, and it is always great to read a book from an expats point of view. I agreed with much of what he said - that the Swiss really do run on time 99% of the time, they are formal and quiet, but they are also kind.I encourage you to read this one. I am, of course, bias becuase I do love Switzerland and have loved living here. You really will learn a lot about one of the richest countries in the world.

As one for whom Switzerland is part of my heart of hearts, I can't begin to express how much I enjoyed this book. I am Swiss, but have been raised and spent most of my life in the USA. This book truly gave me much information that I did not know about Switzerland. I also found myself frequently chuckling to myself, when descriptions of Swiss mannerisms and culture came oh so close to home in accuracy. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about Switzerland, Swiss or no. Thank you for a very enjoyable read.

We were in Switzerland while reading the book on our iPads. Made the trip more interesting and valuable in many ways. Have been to the country many times before, even lived there as a child, but almost everything in the book was either new information or a touching reminder of past experiences and perceptions. The writer's unique style makes it easy to keep going. Lots of laughs!I don't believe another book like this exists. Even if you don't have a trip to Switzerland planned, read the book anyway, just in case. And to impress your friends.Lots of history and "insider" info here, but so much contemporary lore that after reading this book Switzerland seem like the best place in the world. Go often, stay long.

Educational and hilarious compilation of Switzerland's many wonderful quirks, told with love by an expat. I bought the book after returning from a vacation Switzerland, which piqued my curiosity about everything Swiss. This is a great read for anyone who plans to go or has been to Switzerland. If you haven't yet had the pleasure of visiting Switzerland, the excellent hand-drawn maps throughout the book give great context for your trip. If you have been to Switzerland, this book will make you want to go back and visit all 26 cantons, taking same trips as the author to cheese making facilities, chocolate factories, and so many more iconically Swiss attractions. I loved the writer's wry, witty, and highly descriptive story-telling.

This book taught me many things that I didn't know about Switzerland. Although the country is small, it is extremely important because the Germans in Switzerland are richer than the Germans in Germany, the French in Switzerland are richer than the French in France and Belgium, the Italians in Switzerland are richer than the Italians in Italy; and despite it's small population, it avoided the European wars of the 20th century by persuading nearby larger countries, especially Germany, that invading it would be unprofitable. As Meredith Grey once said, terrorists never attack the Swiss because nobody has a beef with Switzerland.

Most of the time I really enjoyed reading this book. There were a few sections that were a bit trying to finish, and the author's jokes were sometimes a little to "hammy" for my taste (but I did get the occasional chuckle). The opperative word in that last sentence is "few". In general, I found the book pleasurable and easy to read.Swiss Watching covers a variety of different topics, so in that sense the book is good for a rather large audience. This is not simply a guide for living in Switzerland, nor is it a history of the country. It combines elements of both in an artful way that leaves the reader feeling better informed about life in Switzerland. I learned a lot from this book.I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who is planning to move to or at least travel in Switzerland. But, I also feel that someone who merely has an interest in Europe or other cultures could get a lot out of this book.

My tour operator suggested this book before our two-week stay. I really enjoyed it for its insights into Swiss people, their history, worldview and personalities. Excellent writing , informative and humorous. What more could you ask?

It is a well written and entertaining book. Just to relax and learn while you are reading it. Some passages are very hilarious. Over all it is an honest book able to portrait an exceptional nation. I wish the author had focused also in other interesting topics such as education and economy.

#4,666 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I love this book! It's the perfect coffee table reference book, and it's format makes it fun to read- like an informative picture book. Other books I've read try to cram in so much information that pretty soon I'm getting the wines confused and forget everything I've read. This book is the perfect accompaniment to any glass of wine, allowing you to learn a little at a time and jumping around the book to the type you are currently enjoying. One of my favorite features of the book is when it tells you the different geographical influences on flavor- for instance, if you like a smokier merlot, get a Washington State wine. I also love it when they tell you similar wine types to try, but they don't have that as often as I would have hoped.

Okay, I'm Madeline's dad. You gotta know that this took a huge amount of effort to clarify the mysterious world of wine into graphics that take mere seconds to understand. I couldn't be more proud. It's a lot of fun forcing on it friends and then seeing them light up with instant understanding. The page that explains how to write useful personal wine notes, for example, instantly organizes the way you do your evaluations of wine.

Great introduction for visually oriented people who are short on time and want to get a quick overview on grapes/taste and wine regions. I would also get another wine book "The Wine Bible" (over 1000 pages, heavy on text) as a more detail-oriented companion to this basic book. Both complement each other perfectly - depending on whether you want to go into more detail (Wine Bible) or get the basics about a grape or wine region in a mind-map-like format (Wine Folly). The two recent books (both were published in 2015) combined will cover more than enough topics (well beyond a mere introduction to wine) for most wine drinkers. This book alone lacks some depth. Hence four stars instead of five. For example, Chardonnay grapes are very popular globally and make for very different wines depending on the region/climate. It's understandable that some simplifications have to be made at 240 pages in a visual design style with lots of graphs and charts (which in this case translates to just two pages covering the popular Chardonnay types).Speaking of visuals. In terms of wine-related movies / documentaries, I can recommend the following films as companions:- Mondovino (2004) - Critical documentary *- Red Obsession (2013) - Global wine business and China's influence *(* These two movies work well back to back)- Sideways (2004) - Feature film, not a documentary- "A Year In...." Trilogy (A Year in Champagne, A Year in Burgundy, A Year in Port is forthcoming in 2016)- Somm (2012)- Somm: Into the Bottle (2015)PS: Somm 2012 is probably the least interesting of the bunch for a wide audience (since it focuses on wine exams and personal stories), but it's still worth watching. Otherwise, skip the 2012 film and just watch the 2015 Somm movie where you will find some interviewees featured again.

I love this book. I've been following Winefolly.com for a while now and it is amazing. I even got my staff into it. When I heard the book was coming out I pre-ordered it immediately. I was not disappointed! I manage a high end Italian counter-service restaurant in Boston and out list is strictly Italian. Not only is this a great reference point for new people who are not so familiar with Italian varietals but it is really helping our servers who have been working exclusively with Italian wine for years understand how that relates to other wines. No longer are my servers coming to me saying, "William, I have a table that says they only drink white Burgundy. What on our list is like that?" Now they go to the book! I might have to buy an additional copy to keep at the restaurant and maybe a 3rd so I can enjoy it at home! Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this beautiful, well written and easily digestible book. Every restaurant in America should buy it for their staff.

I love this book. (I read the 1-star snob, and I can tell you that this book was never written for him.) I have a few wine books. I started buying them when I decided to start a wine club in my neighborhood, and this one has helped direct some of my wine choices for our meetings, moving us through the different types of wines and the different regions. Maybe it doesn't have everything, but so what. No book has everything about everything. It is easy to read, and informative. It will help instruct you as you are getting started by: teaching you what to look for when you see the wine in your glass, how to smell, taste, and form conclusions about the wines you try. I enjoy her style and I find it easy to reference. Wine is a journey like any other. Read a lot, taste a lot, and have fun.

If you're a beginner like me - someone who loves drinking wine but doesn't completely understand it - this book with break your mind open about wine in such an easy to follow way. If you're an old hand wine lover - like my boss who's been drinking/collecting for 30+ years - this book offers the greatest quick references to find what you're looking for.Great layout and design (I'm a graphic designer and this book is pure eye candy for me, front to back). Everything is presented in a way that just makes sense. Living in California I'm inundated by the regional wines so that's where my wine knowledge typically starts and stops, but this book is already letting me talk with the local wine bar somms without sounding like a complete novice. In fact, just yesterday I was in a tasting room in Santa Barbara a with the knowledge I've picked up in this book I realized I hated all the wines I was trying! Not just blanket snobbery either, I was actually able to tell what parts of the wine just weren't working for me. How great is that!
