About the Author
Everett S. Allen was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1916. He moved to Martha's Vineyard when he was eight years old. After graduating from Tisbury High School, he attended Tabor Academy and Middlebury College. He was hired as a waterfront reporter by the New Bedford Standard-Times on the day before the hurricane of 1938, which became the subject for his book A Wind to Shake the World. After enlisting in the US Navy, where he served in Europe and participated in D-Day, he returned to the Standard-Times, where he worked until his retirement in 1979. The author of seven books, Allen died in 1990.

Beautifully written history of a long ago whaling industry: the boats, animals, places and the peoples who were immersed in and effected by this industry during the 1800's. This book describes a large geographic area, and people of diverse cultures and economic situations in an orderly, understandable way. I had a hard time putting it down at times. The only part I passed over was the chapter detailing the process of reducing a whale to useable, sale-able products (of which there were many at the time).
This a remarkable book. Strongly recommended.

This book, by a New Bedford native with family ties to the whaling business, provides a harrowing account of the loss of the arctic fleet in 1871, and puts in context of the settlement of New Bedford by Quakers, and the birth and growth of the whaling industry.
