I read How To Write Funny cover-to-cover in one sitting. What a great book! So much better than I expected — not because I had any doubts about Scott Dikkers (he’s a comedy writing legend, after all), but because over the years I have rarely read anything well-written specifically about the actual techniques and fundamentals of comedy writing. And especially without a lot of fluff and personal anecdotes that may amuse but don't teach. Dikkers strips it down to the essentials, gives good examples, and approaches it analytically without being boring in any way. This book should be required reading for anyone writing, or considering writing, jokes -- as well as all high school class clowns. E.B. White’s classic criticism is “Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested and the frog dies of it.” Dikkers’ dissection of the frog is actually interesting and fascinating, and (spoiler alert) the frog remains very much alive and well.If this book helps you craft even one solid, funny joke (and it will), it'll be worth more than what you paid for it.

Of the four or five comedy writing books I've read, this is by far the best. In fact, it's the only one I've found very helpful at all. The author breaks down into 11 pieces the building blocks of what comedy actually is. If you study those 11 pieces or 'filters' you will be able to see them in every piece of comedy you love. And with practice you can eventually start using those same building blocks to create comedy too. Before reading this book, I had been writing an hour a day for about a year and felt I had plateaued. Reading this book created a total paradigm shift in how I approach comedy writing and a year and half after reading, I got a spot as a contributor to an Onion site. I highly recommend this book!

I loved this book! I've read too many how-to-write books in my time, and most of them left me feeling uninspired and annoyed. They had too many rules without reason. This book was clear, straightforward, and articulated step-by-step processes. I'm not one who typically writes comedy, but the clear instruction here was inspiring for writing in general. There's a lot of info describing common fears, concerns, and neuroses that writers experience, and how to deal with them. I wish I had encountered this book earlier in my writing life. I'm sure I'll reference it again.Larry NocellaAuthor of the novel Razor Wire Karma, available on Amazon

This is where I reminded myself writing is a hard job and you must have passion if you want it to be your primary source of exposure. This is an amazing book about writing comedy which, in and of itself, is not humorous. That isn't to say there isn't anything humorous about it along the way, but it is pretty straight forward in telling you what writing comedy is all about. The biggest tip I learned is to not rely on writing alone to get you going in the humor field. I agree that if you can be funny in writing, you can be funny anywhere. However, this book reminds you again and again that writing comedy is hard and it is not something you can earn a healthy profit from. Instead, it gives you frank and honest advice about what to expect and how to write well-written comedy.I hihgly recommend it to anyone, whether they are writers or people who enjoy good comedy. I refer to often and I know it will be a good staple of my library for years to come.

Such a great resource for writers. It can be applied to many different mediums as well (sketches, stand up, creating an eye-catching dating profile, etc.). I read the electronic version but bought a hard copy for quick access to the 11 funny filters when doing writing exercises. It was easy to read and understand. I now find myself reading Onion headlines and trying to decode the subtext. It's not only a fun little exercise but it helps for making sure your own subtexts make sense when writing funny. Thanks, Scott!

I have read many good books about how to write funny, but this is by far the best. I love how you get actionable ways to use humor, and how Scott Dikkers teach us about the different kinds of humor.I wish I could give it six stars.

Very informative book and a great read. It contains timely and effective principles for writers looking to expand their humor catalog, or who want to add humor to some of their pieces. I have read other books about humor but this one was the clearest one. The other big benefit is it is dedicated to helping writers, it focuses on how to inject humor into writing for publication. This is the only book I saw that focuses on that aspect.

Who writes a book called "How to Write Funny" and then states that he won't be "pressured" into making the book funny?Don't even open this book unless you enjoy lackluster writing, pompous self-promotion, and kindergarten drawings, which the author thinks add humor (really?). Other than the jokes included from real-life funny people, the best part of this book was when it ended. As incredible as it sounds, there is a sequel to this, "How to Write Funnier." Maybe Dikkers got it right with that one or maybe, once again, he didn't want to feel "pressured" to show that he can actually write "funny." Who knows? Who cares? Go spend your money on a latte. It's a better investment.
