In an age filled with "theologians" who have little interest in or knowledge of God, His attributes and His acts, Hodge is a must read. Though he does have his share of quirks (for example, his odd view of the salvation of infants who die), yet his Biblical insights, along with his piercing logic, will make any Christian reader a better theologian. There are so many gems of theological exposition in this work that it would be impossible to list all of them, but I would urge every reader not to miss these--the inspiration of Scripture, the attributes of God, the Person of Christ, the nature of justification by faith alone, the nature of sanctification, the meaning of the Ten Commandments, and of course, though they are often scoffed at in our age, the proofs for the existence of God (Chapter II, Theism).Though there remain a few quite minor formatting flaws in this edition, the editor completed a daunting task to make this complex work conveniently available for Kindle, and at a wonderful price. Many, many thanks!

In my opinion, there's no doubt that Charles Hodge was a great theologian. His work at Princeton did much to preserve the blood redemption of the Cross of Christ for the Church in the US in the mid 19th Century.I think Hodge spent too much time talking about the viewpoints he didn't believe in which take up too much space in this work.I once worked for a supervisor of whom was said "ask him what time it is, and he'll tell you how to build a watch". If you asked Hodge how to be saved, he may give you a 60+ page dissertation on the meaning of the word faith (he does in this work). At times I think he's too wordy.Another thing that caught me off guard is all the Latin in this book. It's in important places, too. He may refer to the work of a by gone Biblical scholar to make a point, but the quote is in Latin. I'm sure if I would have been in his classes at Princeton, I'd have known Latin. I'm not going to learn it now.In my opinion if you want a great Systematic Theology, get Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer's. There's none that can top it. Dr. Chafer does quote Hodge several times in his work.I think Hodge's work is an important part of my library.

Just got this and was hard to put down. Just some really rich reformed theology. Hodge writes very clearly, even by todays modern language. I will say that the Amazon main listing shows a 1981 printing. I received a 2016 printing by Hendrickson; Green, hardbound and printed in USA. This is a review of the 3 volume Set and in this 2016 edition. Also, the Latin that Hodge used has been retained, but no translation. Highly recommend.

While it can be a bit thick at times this book is an excellent explanation of orthodox Christian values and provides clear Scriptural, philosophical, and theological reasons for the views held in this book. Hodge's clear outline enables you to follow his argument easily, and he writes in a manner that is both encouraging and convicting.

Hodges' Systematic Theology is a masterpiece. His most frustrating characteristic is making an important point by quoting Latin. But I don't have any Latin and used it in seminary. I continue to use it today. Now as to Kindle editions. Don't buy this one. For a systematic theology to be helpful, it has to have a Linked Table of Contents. The three separate $0.99 editions (Volumes 1, 2, and 3) do not. For $1.99 you can get "Systematic Theology (With Active Table of Contents) [Kindle Edition]" which is a working electronic edition in one combined volume.

This is a bound index for Charles Hodge's Systematic Theology, not the actual book. Why someone would create/sell this is beyond me. I returned it, but Amazon should delist this item.

Even without a table of contents, this is worth the time reading through it and studying its contents. I would suggest as you initially read through this volume you develop a computer spreadsheet so that after your initial read-through you can refer to your spreadsheet to locate sections when you want to re-read on a particular subject. The same comment applies to Volumes 2 and 3.
