I have been on an expedition to find page turners for a reluctant reader (i.e., my 7.5 years boy). After Dog man, Ook and Gluk, Weird but True, Would you Rather series, this book also has some appeal. The wordplay in this Just Joking book is too clever for his current age though. Hopefully, he will grow to like it more.

Just be prepared to be peppered with a million silly jokes at all times of the day. My daughter would perch on my bed waiting for me to open my eyes and tell me a joke. Crazy child. BUT, some of the jokes aren't even that funny, but strangely enough makes it even funnier when coming from a child who is waiting for you to laugh with baited breath. It's wonderful to see children happy.

My son loves these books. We started reading National Geographic Kids books when he was about six (he's nine now) and I can honestly say that these books have been instrumental in teaching him to read. One weekend, the child actually read a 300 pg. book (one from the Weird, But True Series) to my husband and I over the course of two days - 50 pg.s three times a day until he'd finished. I mention this because last year my son was sent to a reading specialist because his teacher was concerned that he was reading below his age-level. Although I was happy for him to receive the extra attention from the specialist, I always doubted that he had any real problems reading because he read the Nat'l Geo books to us constantly. Thankfully, I was right. He no longer sees the reading specialist, reads above his grade-level, and even reads out-loud to his classmates at lunchtime.Why is this so important? Because kids are often labeled as poor readers when it's not that they can't read, but rather that they simply aren't interested in what they are being given to read. My teen-age step-daughter grew up thinking that she was a poor reader, too. That all changed when I gave her the Twilight Series. She read the last book, "Breaking Dawn," (756 pages) in less than 48 hours!There are several elements that make the Nat'l Geo series so appealing, particularly to elementary aged boys. The layouts are very simple, not cluttered. Each joke (or fact in the Weird, But True Series) is only one or two sentences long. The font is much larger than what you would find in a typical chapter book designed for this age group. And the visual images are excellent - exciting, funny, interesting - they immediately draw the reader in, curious to find out more.The Just Joking Series is one of my son's favorites. We'd previously purchased the first book in the series and my husband and I had each spent several evenings with my son taking turns with him reading the jokes aloud and cracking each other up. We purchased this box set in September for his birthday and are almost through the other two books, as well. We've also pre-ordered "Just Joking #4."The jokes in these books are mostly very funny, very clean, and only occasionally so dumb that they merit the buzzer sound (think "America's Got Talent"). The joke books also include several tongue twisters. Truthfully, our son doesn't really care for these, but the jokes more than make up for this.Of all the joke books we've got, these are our favorites. As a parent, teacher, library volunteer, and chairperson of my son's Scholastic Book Fairs, this is a set I will definitely be recommending for children (especially boys) from pre-K through lower elementary!

I ordered this for my 6 year old granddaughter and she loved it! What a great time we have had reading this together, I think I enjoy the jokes as much as she does. I would highly recommend this book to anyone 6 to 60! The jokes are great and the animal pictures are adorable. A great buy for the money-priceless.

This book was a great gift for our 7 year old, she is in the joke phase where everything needs to be funny. She absolutely loved this and will spend hours reading all the jokes to everyone around her.

Bought for my five year old granddaughter, who loves telling jokes, this is a huge success! She loves telling all of us these jokes and laughs and laughs. A super success! I think any young child would love this book!

At 6 years old, my grandson is at the age where he has discovered jokes. And, his favourite phrase when he makes or does these jokes is "I'm joking you." Eh? So how much more perfect could the title be? But beyond that, NG's "Just Joking" is perfect for his age. Not only are there the jokes (age appropriate) but he's so excited about them that he's excited to read. Get it for the budding comedian in your life and have a laugh.

Our son loves the jokes, and the animal pictures combined, and even has come up with his own jokes based on them. I would recommend as a good beginner joke book for kids.

He is a contemporary architect struggling to come to grips with difficult issues of contemporary culture, tackling them head on. Equally wonderful are his many drawings, which he calls "architoons", that here complement these essays. He is often hard on others, but always harder on himself. He seeks meaning through juxtaposition so that these essays, like his own architectural work, become a sort of Hegelian dialectic of thesis /antithesis leading to a troubled synthesis from which he again departs: towers for the wealthy / housing for the homeless; suburban villas / work for the disabled; commercial / spiritual; engaged / alienated; silly / profound; life /death. Tigerman in these essays comes across as himself a fascinating juxtaposition, like some difficult cross between Howard Roark and Soren Kierkegaard. Schlepping Through Ambivalence is fascinating and fun to read, yet also an important document of a key period in architectural history. For decades Tigerman was at or near the center of everything significant. Tigerman knew many key figures in the last half century. He worked with the pioneering modernist Keck Brothers; and at SOM in its heyday with Bruce Graham, Walter Netsch, Fazlur Khan, and Myron Goldsmith; he studied at Yale with Paul Rudolph and Vincent Scully. He was design director for Harry Weese. He has maintained long, close friendships with Frank Gehry; Peter Eisenman; Michael Graves; Robert Stern; Tom Beeby; John Hejduk; and many others, whom he writes about in these essays. He writes letters posthumously to Mies. He recalls Louis Kahn and what is probably the last conversation an architect had with Louis Kahn before his death. Nobody has been more passionate about architecture's role in society than Tigerman. His background gives him a deep understanding of modern architecture few others possess. So his insistence on imbuing it with broader social, cultural, religious, environmental, and ethical concerns is all the more profound. One of Chicago's most widely influential architects, Tigerman has also been an important educator as well as architect. He also has long been Chicago's greatest impresario for architectural culture. Read it in one sitting yesterday -- I love Dennis Lehane's writing. Different from a lot of his other work, but the guy has range, and isn't afraid to branch out and try something new. Can't understand these people who are brutalizing him for "straying" from the Patrick Kenzie formula that made him famous. I like the variety, and thought he did a good job with a female protagonist. There are some fairly long paragraphs dealing with Rachel's psychological torment, and I occasionally thought of Elmore Leonard ("I try to leave out the parts that people skip") but they do add to the story, even when a little long. Maybe those who are expressing disappointment are missing the nonstop thriller/action/adventure motif of his early work, but the guy isn't cooking Big Macs, he's writing novels! This is something new and different, but so what? The test is, "Do I stay up late to finish the thing because I can't put it down?" And the answer here is an unqualified yes.

The old Dennis Lehane is back. Thank goodness SINCE WE FELL is not another of his historical mafia books. Looks like heâ€™s done with those.But SINCE WE FELL doesnâ€™t begin like one of Lehaneâ€™s older novels. The first half of this book is a study of Rachel, the main character. It does not grip the reader almost immediately, as you might have expected of Lehane before his mafia books.Instead, we learn of Rachelâ€™s discontent with her mother, who refuses to tell Rachel who her father is/was. Eventually, Rachel looks for him on her own. This leads to her initial meeting with Brian, a supposed private detective, who refuses to take her money for a job he knows he canâ€™t do.We also learn a lot more about Rachel, maybe more than we need to know sometimes. For various reasons, though, she is frequently afflicted with panic attacks. They disrupt her life so much that she becomes almost totally housebound.The second half of SINCE WE FELL is Lehane as we used to expect. Now we come to know Brian better. Is he all that he seems? Who is he, really?Thereâ€™s more plot to the second half. But the character study in the first half is what makes the book more than a plot-driven thriller.

Mystic River was one of my favorite novels of its time. And I was on board for the Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro seriesâ€”for a while, until I felt that Lehane was phoning it in. His stand-alone Live By Night wasnâ€™t up to the standard of The Given Day, either. But I am glad I took a chance on this new and vital (and also stand-alone), SINCE WE FELL (look up the one-hit wonder song). This book is, in my opinion, his very best, and demonstrates that he is at the epitome of his talent as a writer. Get ready for a big, brilliant bombshell of a story. Youâ€™ll want to call in sickâ€”it is immersive, cinematic, lovingly written-- unputdownable.I am not going to give spoilers, even minor ones. Every new discovery made me tighten my jaw a bit more, and there were plenty of white-knuckle moments, especially in the latter half of the book. However, I was also deeply connected from the beginning, due to Lehaneâ€™s acumen for building complexity through character. What Lehane did was fuse character development with plot, both necessary and integral to the book as a whole. Rachel Childs, the fractured and caring journalist, is the fascinating protagonist, and as complex a character as you will ever meet in a suspense story. But even secondary characters in this novel have their own unique imprintâ€”no one was generic or glazed over. The steady burn in the first 200 pages is crucial to installing the reader and hooking you into the story, preparing you for a compelling and superb completion. Every. Character. Is. Believable. And the plot never lets you go.We meet Rachel and learn quickly that she has understandable abandonment issues. Her father left when she was three, barely a flicker of remembrance for Rachel, and her mother, a once-famous writer of marriage books, is like a Susan Sarandon at her most acerbic. Figuratively and literally, Rachel is still searching for her father, and suffering with psychological issues and a cauterized spirit stemming from his departure and her motherâ€™s controlling and often bitter tongue throughout her life. Trust is not easily gained for Rachel. And, after a journalistic trip to Haiti, the troubles intensify.The novel covers themes that work together, in tandem and flawlesslyâ€”highlighting abandonment, betrayal, friendship, PTSD, and none so potent a motif as love and trust. This is the kind of love story that can go any which way, and I wonâ€™t tell you which way it goes. Of course, the first line of the bookâ€™s prologue tells you how love can go wrong.â€œOn a Tuesday in May, in her thirty-fifth year, Rachel shot her husband dead.â€That can be a tough act to follow for a lesser talent, but Lehane kicks it up more than a few notches as the story progresses. I was caught up with clenched fists almost every step of the way. There are characters that you warm to, and others you love to hate, but you will be engulfed by events as character and plot move the story forward. Just be patient. This isnâ€™t like the Kenzie novels, with fast action page after page, and it is as much character-driven as plot-driven. They inhabit the narrative hand-in-hand, which I canâ€™t restate enough. And there are moments, events, and dialogues that grip you to the end. As Rachelâ€™s mother warned her on page two:â€œA man is the stories he tells about himself, and most of these stories are lies. Never look too closely. If you uncover his lies, itâ€™ll humiliate you both. Best to just live with the bull#%*^.â€Read it and leap!

This book starts off slow, drags you through Rachel's assorted dysfunctions at a tedious pace, starts to get interesting at around the halfway mark when you think there might be a plot starting to happen, gets ridiculously implausible, then lands with a thud.There are a number of directions Lehane could have taken with this story. Could have made Rachel crazy and hallucinating. Could have made her a hero who does the right thing. Instead he made her another one of those weak pointless women who seem to be all the rage these days in fiction. Here's a SPOILER so you don't waste your money just to find out I was correct in my assessment:Brian has assumed not one, but many fake identities. He is a con man with an elaborate plan to steal millions and leave the country with his equally fake partner, who has a con man wife that he didn't realize was conning him. Rachel, despite everything Brian has put her through, both emotionally and physically, goes along with him.I feel like Lehane is laughing at me for giving him money for this insulting trash, but rest assured it will be the last dime of mine he sees.

The 14th century Byzantine saint Gregory Palamas isn't well known by western Christians, but he ought to be. He was the most influential critic of the arid and Aristotelian scholasticism that had overtaken the Latin church (under the influence of figures such as Thomas Aquinas) and that was threatening to infiltrate the Greek church (under the influence of Barlaam, a convert to Orthodoxy). In criticizing the new Scholasticism, Palamas reaffirmed the ancient tradition of hesychasm and heart-mysticism characteristic of eastern Christianity--a tradition, sadly, that's utterly foreign to contemporary Protestantism, and under-developed in Roman Catholicism.Meyendorff provides a pretty good overview of this ancient tradition, Palamas' 14th-century defense of it, and its later expressions, particularly in Russian Orthodoxy. Curiously, given the book's title, the section devoted explicitly to Palamas is both the shortest and the least informative. Over half the book is devoted to the spiritual tradition of hesychasm as practiced and advocated by the early desert hermits, Evagrios Pontikos, Makarios, Symeon, Maximos, and Gregory Nyssa. Although the paucity of information on Palamas is a bit disappointing, this section on his precursors by itself makes the book well worth reading. In addition, the entire text is beautifully illustrated.In addition to discussing the remembrance of God aimed for by the hesychast tradition's advocacy of silence, ceaseless prayer, and virtue, Meyerdorff also touches on the doctrine of theosis (the tragically-neglected in the west doctrine of deification) as well as the debate between Palamas and Barlaam. This dispute is really important, although at first sight it appears rather esoteric. The debate centered around whether it's ever possible to 'know' God. Barlaam, following Scholastic neo-Aristotelianism, insisted that all knowledge necessarily originates with the senses. Since God is nonmaterial, any putative 'mystical' encounter with God must be subjective. Palamas defended the Orthodox (and, I would add, scriptural) position that although God's essence is unknowable, God's energy is not. The distinction between essence and energy is essential for salvaging the darkness of the Creator on the one hand and the God-revealing Incarnation on the other.I agree with earlier critics that the book could've been better proofread, that the binding is weak, and that the want of a bibliography is troublesome. But in this day and age of 'google,' bibliographical references can easily be traced, and wonderful translations of all the authors quoted by Meyendorff are available.

The first half of this book deals with Eastern monastic practices, highlighting its strengths and perils. This section of the book is of interest primarily to academics who focus on monasticism. The second half of the book outlines St Gregory's life, his conflict with Barlaam, and the resulting theology. The book concludes with a look at modern hesychasm in Russia.Meyendorff notes that Palamas did not exactly oppose Aristotelianism, per se (thus blunting a common charge made by Catholic scholars, notably von Balthasar). He saw it as a useful system, provided that one did not get carried away into excesses with it.I assume most readers are familiar with the details of Barlaam. Of importance is Barlaam's actual theology. Barlaam, following a nominalistic agnosticism, thought that the monks were saying one could bodily see the divine essence. 1) Barlaam said that all knowledge is sense-perception. 2) God, being defined as a Platonic postulate, is beyond sense-perception. Therefore, any knowledge/communion with God can only come from "intermediaries" (102).Palamas responds thusly:He is going to say that we do have a direct experience with God but we do not know the "essence" of God. How can he say this? First, God is essentially apart from other creatures because he is "uncreated." Therefore, when creatures participate in God, they participate in "uncreated life." Still, this does not yet address Barlaam's challenge. Palamas will thus say that revelation, participation, deification, is a free act (energy) of the living God (118-119).Therefore, we see a distinction between the divine act of revelation and the unknowable essence. This does not introduce a fourth term in the Godhead since God in his simplicity is fully present both in the essence and the energy.Conclusions and Implications of Palamism:1. There is no autonomous reality between God and creatures because God himself, in his condescension, is that reality (122).2. The victory of Palamism protected the East from the onslaught of the Renaissance (94).3. Palamas reestablished the dignity of matter, since the body fully participates in the energies of God (108). A corollary of this is a revitalization in the sacraments, for the new life in Christ is present in the sacraments.I close with a quote from Meyendorff,A...decision was set before the Orthodox Church in the fourteenth century: a choice between a unitary (integral) concept of man based on the Bible, affirming the immediate efficacy of redemptive grace in every sphere of human activity, or the choice of an intellectualized spiritualism claiming independence for the human intellect...and denying that any real deification is possible here below. There is no doubt that the secularism of the modern age is the direct consequence of that second choice (171).

We bought this along with One Line a Day: A Five-Year Memory Book (Chronicle Books Staff), which cost another dollar or so. The Chronicle book has a nice hard cover gold embossed type and is the perfect diary size. In contrast, this one is so plan, from the paperback cover to the inside paper, that I actually thought it was the galley (proofreading copy) and not the final book. Some people (maybe the sight impaired?) might prefer the bigger lines to write on, but the general quality and impression is so poor, I would be embarrassed to give it as a gift. Back it goes.

I got this for my daughterâ€™s birthday in October. She loves it! She told me the other day that itâ€™s one of the best gifts sheâ€™s ever received and loves itâ€™s easy 5 year lay-out.

I like this one cause its much larger and gives you plenty of room and it opens wide enough to write in it

I really love the concept of this book and the simple design. So far it has been durable (2 mos). I would prefer it to be a little smaller but other than that it has been great and I definitely recommend.

Hockey For Dummies 2nd Edition was a very entertaining 300 page read chalked full of fun stories and information for the person who literally just stumbled upon hockey and wants to know more about it. Furthermore, its' also presented in such an engaging way that those who have some experience with hockey like me, won't be bored [though I personally thought the hockey exercise portion was a bit much]. The real problem I see with this book is that it hasn't had a new addition since the early 2000's and hockey like everything else changes. There's been AHL expansion, the 2010 Olympics (which made me a fan), rule changes, and the NHL sure as heck is not on ESPN/ABC anymore. This baby is past due for an update.

Good comprehensive book on all aspects of hockey, like no other, but could use a good update. For serious NHL fans, or those who will be, the NHL, tweaks, or entirely changes, or even eliminates a few rules, almost yearly. Get the current NHL Official Guide, and Record Book, to go along with this book, and you should be very well covered.

More than we needed...we needed just an explanation of the rules and penalties and signals the official use

Few times in life can it be said a product is a game changer, a true life enhancer. I can say with a soul untouched by marketing ghouls or any partiality developed by product loyalty over the years, that this item has changed the course of my life. This product has the ability to take any mundane, boring life, and make it analogous to being Crocket in Miami Vice as you drive along a hot Miami freeway at night with the top down. This product is the air I breathe, the warm touch of sun on my skin, the look of love reflected in a childâ€™s eyes. If I was ever trapped in a layer of the space time continuum with no hope of escape, and could only have one item to spend the rest of time with, it would be this item. I attempted to take a picture showing me with this item, but so much of my pure essence is focused on enjoying this item that I no longer reflect light as a normal person and can no longer be seen in a standard photograph. I would say more, but that would take time away from using my item, and I physically cannot handle thatâ€¦..

Hockey for Dummies is overall a very good read for fans of Hockey, or even the more causal person who simply wishes to know more about a sport which the great white north is so passionate about at least. So with this said I think that Hockey for Dummies accomplishes its own stated goal. I purchased this book with the intent of reading it during the hockey season, but as it worked out the season didn't start, instead we have yet another lockout, so in light of that I decided to set it as my goal to finish it before the lockout was over, hoping to have hockey back quickly. But unfortunately I have in fact met the goal of finishing it before the lockout has ended, which is still going as I write this (Nov 7, 2012).I agree with most of the other reviews that it is quite dated and that is nearly my only grip with it as a whole. Being published in 2000, but having the Kindle edition listed as being a 2011 release, leaves this as odd not knowing the version I was reading was over a decade old at first.Also being a New Jersey Devils fan with none of the books statistics reflecting Brodeur whatsoever and as such failing to note that Brodeur now holds nearly all goal tender records, is well to say the least a bit frustrating. Now this is a bit anachronistic I confess, but I think it is a worth while complaint for at least the Kindle edition. I also wish it would have told where the award names for the NHL came from like the Norris, the Lady Byng, the Vezina, etc. Obviously what this trophies represent also not being in the book is an obvious oversight I think for people new to Hockey.Other then these minor points along with what others have stated about rule changes since this edition (2nd) was written, it is a solid volume and can give us all a solid ground to better enjoy not merely the game today but also how we got where we are. It does this in a very light hearted manner with plenty of anecdotes of both bizarre and at times amazing facts, such as goalies not wearing masks at all until 1959, which I frankly find insane, thou to make that even worse they weren't universal until 1973! There was also a wonderful story of a team meeting at a hotel pool that involves a third story balcony.Now if you have been watching Hockey for some time you will have heard some of these things in bits and pieces over the years, but this is a great place to have them all collected together and makes them so quotable, particularly with other hockey fans. So all in all I wish they would make an updated version, but this being said I still found it a pleasant and worth while read for anyone interested in such.

This is a grat book for new fans and those who need a efresher course. It explains every facet of hocke in an easy to understand format.

This book is really of no use unless you buy the most recent edition. I wanted to learn about the rules of hockey. There was about 8 pages of that and dozens of pages about how to exercise, where to find a place to play and who the stars were at the time of publication. This is the first "dummies" book I have ever purchased and I will never purchase any again

I'm a new fan to hockey, which has gained immense popularity over the last two decades. I've watched hockey for years, but didn't understand the nuances of the game, and this book provides comprehensive coverage for the beginning fan. It succeeds perfectly at its mission--to be an easy-to-read intro to the game for folks who want to learn more about a sport that is fun to watch and is rapidly achieving equal popularity with football and basketball. Highly recommended.

Silicon imaging is a fast growing area of the semiconductor industry. Its use in cell phone cameras is already well established, and emerging applications include web, security, automotive and digital cinema cameras. High performance silicon imaging covers the fundamentals of silicon image sensors, with a focus on existing performance issues and potential solutions. It then considers several applications for the technology. Part I begins with a review of the fundamental principles of photosensing and the operational principles of silicon image sensors. It then focuses in on charged coupled device (CCD) image sensors and metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) images sensors. The performance issues considered include image quality, sensitivity, data-transfer rate, system level integration, rate of power consumption and the potential for 3D imaging. Part II then provides a detailed discussion of how CMOS technology can be used in a range of areas, including in mobile devices, image sensors for automotive applications, sensors for several forms of scientific imaging, and sensors for medical applications. High performance silicon imaging will be an excellent resource for both academics and engineers working in the optics, photonics, semiconductor and electronics industries. Daniel Durini is the leader of a staff unit at the Central Institute for Engineering, Electronics and Analytics (ZEA-2) of the Forschungszentrum JÃ¼lich. He is an author of more than 45 papers and the holder of two patents in the area of CMOS photosensors.

About the Author

Daniel Durini is currently Research Professor in areas of microelectronics and radiation detection at the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) in Puebla, Mexico. He obtained the B.Sc. degree in Electrical-Electronic Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 2002, the M.Sc. degree in area of Microelectronics from the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics in Mexico in 2003, and the Ph.D. degree in area of Microelectronics from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany in 2009. He was with the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems (IMS) in Duisburg, Germany, between 2004 and end of 2013, where he led during the last four years a group dedicated to developing special CMOS process modules for high-performance photodetection devices, pixel structures and imagers. Prior to his current position, he was with the Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics, ZEA-2 - Electronic Systems of the research centre Forschungszentrum JÃ¼lich in JÃ¼lich, Germany, where he headed between 2015 and beginning of 2018 the development of Detector Systems dedicated to scientific applications. He received the Duisburger Sparkasse Award for outstanding Ph.D. thesis in 2009 and two best paper awards. He has authored and co-authored more than 60 technical papers and three book chapters, and holds six patents in the area of CMOS image sensors. He is Member of the IEEE since 2009, and forms part of the National System for Researchers (SNI) in Mexico since 2014.
