There seems to be no better day than today, International Women's Day, to talk about an extraordinary piece of science fiction written by the brilliant Nnedi Okorafor, about belonging and identity from the perspective of a powerful young woman.You might recall that Binti was one of my two favorite works of science fiction of last year. It was evocative. Beautiful. Frightening. Most importantly, it was different. It managed to pack an incredible and vibrant world, a complex and compelling protagonist, and a spectacular plot into a fairly short piece of fiction. It told a story that could have easily fallen into the category of sci-fi tropes, but it avoided them by applying a unique voice and perspective through Binti, it’s main character.Binti: Home finds Binti after about a year at Oomza University. A year after she heroically (and accidentally, if I recall correctly) brokered peace between two warring planets. A year after she left home in the dead of night, against the wishes of her family and community, to study what is essentially mathemagics off-world. Binti’s experiences have changed her enormously—represented by a physical transformation: her dreaded hair has become like the tentacles of the jellyfish-like Meduse.The physical change is a vital piece of the story, not an on-the-nose metaphor for the internal changes in Binti. Much is made of physical appearances in Binti’s world, from the red clay she adorns herself with to the tribal intolerance she suffers at the hands of the upper class on Earth (and at Oomza U), and to the seemingly strange behaviors of the “desert people” that Binti’s tribe finds less-than-worthy of a seat at the table.As Binti is a story of perseverance and growth in the face of different types of adversity, Binti: Home is a story about shedding preconceived notions and inbuilt intolerances; about how experience inexorably changes us, and changes how the world sees us. In this excellent sequel to Okorafor's novella "Binti", we follow the space-traveling math-whiz, Himba girl back to Earth. She's accompanied by the alien Meduse Okwu, and coming home turns out to be a whole lot more complicated than she thought...This is excellent and well-crafted science fiction that blends together mind-bending technology, space travel, aliens, mathematics, family, and a young girl growing up and trying to find her place in the world. Okorofor's prose moves the tale along swiftly and surely, and there are moments of beauty, as well - especially towards the end when Binti encounters some family members she didn't even know existed... The ending is a cliff-hanger that left me clamouring for more, and I can't wait to read the third and final installment of Binti's story.

One advantage of discovering Nnedi Okorafor’s “Binti” late was that I didn’t have to wait long for the sequel. I fell in love with the character and the author’s writing style exactly suits me so I was delighted that the sequel came out soon after.Initially I was disappointed that more time wasn’t spent at Oomza Uni as Binti and the Medusa Okwu return to Binti’s home early in the book. In the original “Binti”, while clearly sci fi with the existence of aliens and space travel, the scenes of Binti’s home were far removed from that and set in a very old, traditional culture. However, like the original, Binti, her family and culture were just as fascinating as any alien world. At first it seemed that the story would be focused entirely on the culture and family but gradually and artfully developed into full-fledged sci fi with the background filling in.The story kept me enrapt but I did have one issue- a cliffhanger ending. I dislike those so much that it would normally ruin the book for me. But I enjoyed the story so much I have to forgive it :)

Somehow, the author manages to convey that there are deep and rich cultures here, without actually delivering any of that depth or richness. So the Himba spread mud on their faces... But why? Too little is explored, too much is simply told. Worst of all are the flat characters. Even Binti seems to be shallow, and the other characters are paper thin. Spoiler alert here on. The Meduse are so incredibly simplistic it's boring. Oh, those pesky humans stole our stinger. Too bad we are honor bound to go killing now. Oh well. And the academics? They accept that the Meduse killed a shipload of students, and then they reward them for it.The sequel brings a little more richness, and the characters and culture are more believable, but it still falls flat. Literally. If the author delved more deeply into her characters instead of simply pushing the plot forward, I think her writing would be very interesting at least.

At first read I was overwhelmed with the Sanskrit technical terms, which in those early days seemed a monumental obstacle to me. In some sort of stubborn determination, I told myself that it didn't matter if I couldn't understand the terminology in the beginning. I resolved to simply plow through the text and get whatever I could out of it.So I did and from the first verse on there was an abundance of inspiring wisdom to contemplate, wonderful insights into the process of enlightenment that are clearly stated for the seeker, granted with some spiritual experience.In my view, the Shiva Sutras are for the person who is already a bit along on the Path Home. I would recommend the Bhagavad Gita to anyone who is just beginning to practice. The Bhagavad Gita explains everything and does have the power to enlighten you. You don't need anything else --- and the Shiva Sutras will fill in your understanding of what you are experiencing and what you may experience.Jaideva Singh was a highly respected scholar who translated other Kashmir Shaivite texts. He thankfully included a 28 page `Glossary of Technical Terms' which is useful, or more precisely crucial and indespensible in your study of Kashmir Shaivism.I have not yet assimilated all the Sanskrit words in the glossary, but the ones that have permeated my limited western mind have revealed a depth of understanding and insight into the secret meanderings of the soul that has changed my consciousness and the way I think over time.Sacred SanskritSanskrit is said to be a sacred language, the language of the gods and the metaphysical principles they embody. English is a language of commerce. Sanskrit has words that can describe various states of consciousness, of moods of surrender to the God-within you, and the obstacles we place in our path.There are endless metaphysical concepts that are painfully difficult to describe in English, but are easily expressed in Sanskrit. I believe that you will find it well worth your time and effort to slowly gain a familiarity with these sacred terms.Take the Sanskrit word SPANDA. Jaideva Singh's glossary defines SPANDA as: "Apparent motion in the motionless Shiva which brings about the manifestation, maintenance and withdrawal of the universe." The simple contemplation of the suggestion of the omnipotent power of `apparent motion within the motionless' eternal immeasurable immensity is enough to move you toward a higher way of being.Another superb example is the Sanskrit word BHAIRAVA: "This is an acrostic word, BHA indicating bharana, maintenance of the world; RA, ravana or withdrawal of the world; and VA, vamana or projection of the world." In one sublime word the principles that create, support, and destroy our universe are contained.Often a word will have various meanings, for example BINDU:1. A point, a metaphysical point.2. Undivided Light of Consciousness.3. The compact mass of Shakti (power) gathered into an undifferentiated point ready to create.4. Parah pramata, the Highest Self or Consciousness.5. Anusvara or nasal sound ... suggesting that Shiva in spite of the manifestation of the universe is undivided.6. A specific teja or light appearing in the center of the eye-brows by the intensity of meditation.Gaining even a cursory familiarity with these sacred Sanskrit terms will enhance and refine your consciousness. Kashmir Shaivism is a brilliant system of thought and in my view, well worth the effort. The Shiva Sutras are one of its primary texts.There were many ideas within the Shiva Sutras that thrilled me right away, even before I had acquired some feeling for its language. One of these is the understanding that rejecting the world is perhaps not as efficacious as we have been led to believe. After all, the world is the expression of the Oneness, of the God permeating the All we are seeking. If we cannot find our way Home through the labyrinth of the Divine Creation, it may mean we are not masters at all."... it is not necessary for the aspirant to lock himself up in a room and plunge into a trance in order to realize the delight of Self [Atma, the God-within]. He can find this delight in the ordinary, normal course of life if he is mindful ... he looks within, he will have a feel of the Self ... In that feel of the Self, he will experience the perennial joy of I-consciousness ... the ever-present joy of SAMADHI [bliss]."In fact it may prove more challenging to lead an ordinary life while maintaining a high consciousness in union with the One, than isolating ourselves in some monastic cell.Sutra I.2: Jnanam BandhahA very basic idea to Kashmir Shaivism, which is clearly stated in the Shiva Sutras, is the understanding that we are all Veiled portions of the Oneness, the Creator. This Creator in termed as Shiva in Kashmir Shaivism; the word implies the "good" and "the name of the Divine in general; the foundational prakasha or divine light; the Absolute; the transcendent divine principle."The entire mystery of life revolves around Shiva's "wonderful power of veiling his real nature ... This Self-veiling is His technique or stratagem for the play of life in varied, multiple forms. Man is bound to transmigratory existence, to sense-life, to the life of his own vehicles or bodies only so long as he allows himself to be confined to the limited knowledge of his senses and mentation. When he recognizes his real nature, he is free."The Creator is playing at not being all-powerful omniscience as us. Everyone and everything in this temporal holographic universe is a form of the Creator, the Oneness manifested in innumerable forms. You and me and everyone on this earth, in this universe, the beings in all the Myriad Realms, the creatures of Nature, even the rocks and sea are the Veiled forms of the Creator - in this case identified as Lord Shiva or Para Bhairava.When we realize this - not just mentally, as an intellectual abstraction, but as a very deep way of Being, when we Become that Realization - we are Liberated. We are the actor on the stage, all the other players; we are the stage itself, and the audience that observes. We remain in the Play only as long as we want to. When we are weary of our adventures in Time and Space, we call out - perhaps in anguish, perhaps in Love - we call out for our Source. We long to go Home.Sutra I.4: Jnanadhisthanam matrikaOne of the most fascinating ideas clearly expounded in Kashmir Shaivism and the Shiva Sutras is the idea that the universe is the product of sound. The Power of Sound is said to correspond to the letters of the Sanskrit alphabet."This Power is called Mother, because it produces the entire universe. Highly recommended, with a very good commentary

This is undoubtedly a definitive text on the Kashmir Shaivist view of ultimate reality. The book is extremely informative, with word-for-word translation and explanation of the text and commentary, supplemented by useful Notes. It is beautifully laid out and followed by a superb glossary. Very pleased to have such a scholarly work.that is full of amazing insight. Makes me want to read all of Singh's work in the series. I wish it had included a romanized version of the Sanskrit text. That would be perfect.

When I first looked at this book I almost disregarded it because it was prefaced with a blessing from Swami Muktananda from whom I hadn't gotten very good vibrations. But I continued on and got very different vibrations from the rest of the book. I was delighted to find what seemed to be a genuine spiritual classic presented superbly: a brilliant highly informative introduction, a handy overview summary of the sutras(verses), each sutra presented in original Sanskrit with accompanying transliteration and with high quality English translation with lots of notes, a very informative and insightful exposition, a very helpful and well done glossary, a small subject index, an extensive index to key Sanskrit terms, and an index to the sutras in alphabetical Sanskrit. I don't know of anyone who I would consider to be a master of the Siva(Shiva)Sutras (with the exception of legendary and mythological figures such as Padma Sambhava), but I feel that Jaideva Singh is a highly advanced student and brings the light of advanced yogic realization to this translation along with a marvelous gift for being able to bridge the gap between ancient Sanskrit and modern English, between the subtle sublimities of high Saivite philosophy and the cultural mind-set of the modern English speaking world.

Beautiful in every way. When I saw the Dinner Party at the Brooklyn Museum, I was overwhelmed. I could have spent a week there absorbing this stupendous work of art and felt sorry to leave. With this book I have the next best thing to being there in person.

This is an incredible book and a wonderful women's history resource. It talks about goddesses, women in history, etc. as well as the art project itself. The project made vulva plates for different women, some real women, some fictional, but things like a frilly Victorian pink lace 3D vulva for Emily Dickinson upset some...and caused this artwork to be banned many places. The book talks about the women's names on the tiles that make up the floor, about the runners which were hand embroidered for the display, etc. This is a book about women and art, women's history, and more! I highly recommend this book for all women.

I bought this book as part of a class I was taking in Art History. I was thrilled with it. The photography is great. Each woman is identified and the settings explained. Highly recommend.

I was able to visit the exhibit when it was in Boston so many years ago (1980). I was amazed at what they had done and the scope of the project. I LOVED how Judy Chicago wanted to "celebrate" women in history and in such a unique way. I have nothing but good things to say about this book, but the exhibit was extraordinary!

This is a veritable resource of women who have been written out of history by our male-dominated cultures of the west. And to have photographs of the in estimable The Dinner Party warms the heart of any sensitive person. One of the most seminal art creations of the twentieth century, it is gratifying to have it finally out of storage and on view at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Judy Chicago has provided a centuries overdue feminine history.

I was blown away with "the Dinner Party" at the Brooklyn Museum! There is so much to take in about this complicated exhibit and I wanted to know more about the artist's work. Imagine my disappointment when I go to the museum gift shop and they do not have a hard bound book about it! So, after getting back to my iPad that evening, I went to Amazon and found this book. I like the catechism, but it is not a hardcover. It is a paperback with a supposedly stiffer spine. And, it is for this reason they advertise it as hardback.

The Baltimore Catechisms are essential for any Catholic family to have to ensure their children are well-versed in their faith. This particular printing is of great quality. I have no complaints. These books will form the foundation of my family's education about their faith for years to come.

I am a single woman and needed a new car. I heard the author of this book on the radio and was very impressed. He has been publishing this every year for a couple of decades. I bought a new car in July using this book as a guide. Very easy to read, very organized and well laid out. You can the best and safest car in your price range very easily. I wouldn't buy a car without it.

It is a good resource to get an overview of the cars available in the US & where they are manufactured. Some to the subjects/facts seemed to be carried over from previous years. The section on tires shows brands I have never heard of or seen advertised. It would be helpful if the country of manufactured was shown.

Great info helped my in recent purchase of a car.

The book is somewhat opaque in how it scores vehicles. Some internal inconsistancies in ratings (i.e., cars with a lot of consumer complaints given a higher score than similar cars with fewer complaints. Lastly, I can't figure out their crash scores, which do not agree with either IIHS or NHTSA scores. I trust CR or Edmunds more.

This is AMAZING. I'm going on a trip and we all know there is NO WAY the slang is up to date in those little phrase books- especially since I usually just borrow them from the library, so that means they're at least 2 to 5 years old, if not older. And let's face it, as much as we like slang here in the states too, I feel like it's a slow moving target, and anything you need to know is in popular music. But I know ZERO Italian songs, so I need this! Pro tip- look up the top seller songs in the country you're visiting and look up the lyrics. There's nothing more annoying than hearing the top 3 songs over and over and not having any idea what they're about. Maybe that's just me. Anyway! The book! I like that it’s lean and doesn’t give you info that you would already know having taken classes. And it does say right up front, this book is for people who have already studied some Italian, so keep that in mind.

This is the book for people who like knowing how to swear in multiple languages. A grasp of basic Italian would be useful for using this book, but it's not strictly necessary. The first two sections cover the basics of pronunciation and grammar, so even if you don't know any Italian, using this book will help you at least know how to correctly make (im)polite conversation. I'm particularly fond of the short explanations for some of the phrases - they explain where the word came from, how to properly use it, or where you're most likely to hear it. With such a wide variety of phrases (and some helpful suggestions), it's pretty easy to find the right phrase for a situation. Euvino also includes explanations at the beginning of each chapter which, in addition to being entertaining, provide context and advice for use of these phrases.

As a former Italian student, I can say that this would have come in really handy during my studies. In particular, it is an awesome source of vocab and phraseology that I would have found very useful for my written essay assignments. The words and phrases are formatted so they are easy to read and pick out from the rest of the text. I'm not in love with the overall tone of the book; it tends towards exalting in being vulgar. However, there is a lot of useful content, both "vulgar" and clean. I was a little confused by the order the chapters are in. I think I would have prefered all the less-vulgar or non sexual content to be in the first half of the book with all the sexual and vulgar content in the second half. Overall, I would absolutely keep this on my bookshelf for easy reference.

I am attempting to learn new languages, and as someone who has a descent grasp on spanish I was confident Italian would be a pretty similar and easy situation, I was wrong. This book was an excellent find and it gave me assistance in learning conversational casual, more so than apps and websites had been able to. I had more than enough sources for basic Italian lessons but this book gives you a way to understand certain things that will not be covered in those aforementioned lessons. It is a great supplement to anyone who is learning Italian and going to visit Italy, but also wants to be able to keep up with the locals, learning more than just how to ask where the bathroom is and how to order food.

I bought this book as a joke for a friend who will be visiting Italy for the holidays and so far it’s been a hit! He’s been really wrapped up in the more flirtatious aspects of the book aka the Nice and Naughty chapter. It’s a little too sexy/vulgar for me but that’s part of the Italian charm of this book. If I could put the blushing emoji for that chapter, I would. My friend also likes the Dining and Desserts chapter since it really cuts into what key words and phrases foodies must know. Sadly, there were no hand gesture diagrams. However, there is both the polite and impolite of ordering Italian food. It’s a funny but smart book overall so be prepared to have a good laugh and learn some really useful Italian.

A required guide for everyone wanting to learn words and phrases used often in everyday situations. Highly recommend this very handy and important book! Good size with categories for every occasion and not typically learned in the classroom!

So fun, not for prudes. I wont need most of these phrases and a lot are quite dirty/ shocking, but it is truly entertaining.
